Should I worried about the grove cut into the casting from thier being 2 of them when I recieved me SS from the factory.

Those washers in the picture are not the domed washer, 53. See this thread for pictures of the domed washer: https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?p=292150#p292150 Caution, it also shows pictures of it installed backwards. Is it possible that someone installed two flat washers where one domed washer should be??? Does your machine have washer Item 97?

I'm a bit lost by the picture of the groove. Maybe take one zoomed out a bit, I'm not sure of the location we're looking at.

I know the Gen 2 kit changes Item 96 because the quill extension shaft is longer. IIRC it does this by adding a spacer similar to 96.(?) So I'm not sure about 97, but don't see a second one in the pictures of kit content on SS.com. But you are saying your machine already had these two washers before you started on Gen 2, correct?

The casting where the 2 washers ride now have a notch ground into it.

Here my wife is holding both washer in place it looks like the grove was ground into the casting the size of the washers.

Okay, much more clear what you are saying now. Though I'm still confused. :confused: Those washers are not present in that location on any headstock I've seen. You have a "C" headstock. I believe the picture you show with 'no groove' is a "B." On a "C" that is a normal machined surface for the spring housing. Those washers don't go there and I don't think they would fit over the spring housing.

The area I've marked in green appears normal to me for a "C" headstock. The area I've marked in red is where the domed washer would ride on the quill extension shaft. If those two flat washers were there in lieu on one domed washer, I would replace them with the proper part.

No apology necessary, I'm happy to help if I can. I'm glad if we got it sorted out. Good luck with the rest of your Gen 2 upgrade. I'm still not real clear on the two flat washers Vs. one domed washer part of this.

1 of those 2 non-stock washers shown in one of the pictures looks like a Belleville. Maybe prior owner tried to substitute it for item 53 spherical (domed) washer.

Item 53 works something like a Belleville but is shaped differently and not "conical" like a real Belleville.

Bellevilles are handy when a small but strong force spring is needed. They can be stacked in "parallel" and "series" configurations to get all sorts of force/deflection characteristics.

And I apologize for NOT initially looking up what part #53 was and going off on a non relevant tangent re the two quill stop serrated washers.

BTW that B headstock is mine!

Maybe when thee get around to installing those serrated washers my comment will help get them installed correctly.

So no machined seat for the domed washer. WHEW!

Question is, what is the total thickness of the flat + belleville washer compared to the thickness of the domed washer? If close they are a good substitute. JMO

So now I notice that lewparsell said "This is a new 2020 machine from ShopSmith" and thus those 2 washers came from the factory, and no prior owner. But sure enough the PP parts list says item 53 and not those 2 washers he has. Mystery continues.

I guess we can't blame this one on prior owners. Maybe Shopsmith ran out of 53 and substituted?? That would be not good at all.

Thanks again for your help, it is all done and works well. The only other issue I had was with the upgraded 10 position quill handles. The hub fit real tight and took a little love with a dead blow hammer to get them seated correctly. I found watching Jim latest video to be a better resource then the supplied manual. I'm am still a happy ShopSmith user.
