Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
I bought my Mark V new in 1978 for $995 at a mall demonstration in Biloxi, Mississippi. I saved the $35 shipping cost taking the one they used at the demo because they were heading back to Dayton, Ohio the next day. I received all the accessories with it and it included the course.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
I am currently writing a new version of this course. It is called Shopsmith Mark 4/7/520 Self Study Course. It is completely new with full color pictures and currently being field tested by 5 volunteer owners. Its approach and assignments are written specifically for the new owner who has had no prior exposure to woodworking and wants to learn. It covers all 7 functions of the Mark 7. It focuses exclusively on the current fence and table system that people get with a new machine. It will be published later this year. The table saw lessons have 20 assignments and are finished being field tested. Digital media will come as well. My YouTube channel and Facebook page both named Shopsmith Mark 4/7/520 are designed to support this course.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
It will be interesting how long the mothership tolerates the use of the shopsmith trademark!

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
Can you explain in more detail what specifically you are talking about? I am working with Nick Cupps at Shopsmith to make sure that everything in the new manual is acceptable to Shopsmith Inc. and has their permission.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
The US Trademark Office shows the following Wordmarks that Shopsmith had at one time are currently DEAD and CANCELLED:
MAXI-CLAMP, EDGEWOOD, SHOPCRAFT, SHAVINGS, BENCHMARK, THE ENCORE GROUP, HOMETOOL, SAW SMITH, SHOPMATE, WOODWORKING UNLIMITED, SAVIIIGE CULTIIIRE, ENRICHING LIVES THROUGH WOODWORKING.
The only remaining ones currently are the word Shopsmith written in any font and the Shopsmith Power Pro emblem in blue, white, black, gray, and red that you see on the Gen 1 Power Pro display panel. The red circle with the word Shopsmith inside it like you see on the speed dial of the traditional headstock DOES NOT HAVE A TRADEMARK ON IT according to a current search of the US Trademark Office.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
All, the wordmark "Shopsmith is a live, registered trademark, and is claimed and registered for use with the following goods and services:
"Multi-Purpose Power Tools Comprising Lathes, Drill Presses, Horizontal Boring Machines, Disc Sanders, Circular Saws, Shapers, Routers, and Dust Collectors; specifically adapted parts and attachments therefor, namely, bandsaws, jointers, belt, drum, strip and conical Sanders, jigsaws, scroll saws, lathe duplicators, pin routers, planers, molders, biscuit joiner, grinding wheels, and sharpeners; mounting bases and tables, table extensions, table inserts, table plates, support tables and castors all being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Power stands for machines and roller stands for machines; Faceplates, arbors and chucks being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Tailstocks being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Saw blades, jointer and planer blades all being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Router bits, power drill bits, and specifically adapted cases therefor; Dovetail cutters, shaper cutters, lathe centers, mortising attachments, mortising hold downs, tennons holders, rip fences, shaper fences and shaper collars all being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Saw guards being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Dado assemblies comprising of Blades and spacers being a specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Lathe tool rests, lathe chisels, sand paper, fabric covers all being specifically adopted parts for multi-purpose power tool; Dowel centers and Coupling Kits comprised of a power coupler, head stock and accessory hubs, and all being specifically adapted parts for multi-purpose power tool."
Note that books, manuals, etc, are not covered by this registration, so Stephen is absolutely free to use the Shopsmith name. Though the Shopsmith logo shows a ® symbol, Stephen is correct that the registration has lapsed. They may claim that it currently falls under TM status, so Stephen is wise to be coordinating with the folks at Shopsmith llc. I personally own a registered trademark, and have also protected a few logos with a TM, which is different than a registered trademark, indicated by the presence of the ® symbol.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
Since thee is working closely with Nick my concern is mitigated.
As a history lesson Bill Mayo(RIP) could enlighten thee regarding his use of shopsmith 'stuff' in his used shopsmith endeavors and the visit by lawyer types.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
If I recall correctly, wasn't Bill attempting to digitally re-publish Hands-On! Magazine? If so, that was copy-written content, which is quite different from a complete re-write inspired by old lessons.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
My understanding from his posts here was that he was selling refurbished Shopsmiths at a county fair type event and got a visit from a lawyer who not only demanded he remove any references to shopsmith but also he not wear a shopsmith badged hat.
I do not think rewriting anything was in his skill mix. However the digital republish would have been. Interesting - ThankYou.

Re: Shopsmith "Self Study Course"
My mistake. Someone ran afoul with an attempted the Hands-On! digitizing project several years back. I don't remember that incident with Bill.
