Speed Control Issue ?

Post by cmyk »

I was turning some small bowls today (D or E on speed control, I had just started the unit was cool) when the unit started making some noise that didn’t belong. Thinking it’s been some time since I oiled the sheeves and speed control I decided normal maintenance was the answer. While on the way tubes I started the unit and turned the speed way up. Shut it down and oiled both with a few drops of light weight oil (the stuff I’ve used for years). Then I ran the motor through the RPM range a couple of times.

It sounded worse. I tried starting it again at low speed and it wouldn’t start, just a hummm while the motor tried to go. I could turn it by hand but it felt heavy. The belts seem fine. I took this picture of the speed control. Things don’t look right but I don’t know what’s happened or what to do. I did notice when reaching the control was warm. Photo attached.

I know many of you will know what's up and what to do. I’d appreciate any help to get my unit back to normal. Thanks for reading.

It looks like the button bearing on your control sheave is totally shot. Sometimes you can just replace that part but it is better to get a new control sheave. The “ pork chop” or quadrant assembly may also be damaged. Individual pars are available, or you can just purchase a whole new assembly.

After replacing the damaged parts you will need to do the high speed adjustment. You might consider doing “ upgrade” that Bill Mayo recommended for the speed control assembly.

This thread has some info on how to perform the needed adjustments after you replace the broken part…

If you want to attempt to replace only the bearing this video shows you Jacob Anderson technique. The replacement bearing can be found on eBay.

Here is a link for all of Jacob Anderson’s videos. He has provided a wealth of information on how to repair the conventional headstock.

Great info. Many thanks!!! Let me ask a couple more questions.
1. While things are apart is there any other parts I should consider replacing. For example should I replace the belts?
2. I suppose it's best to do this on a bench and not while the motor is on the way tubes, correct?
3. And I suppose the power lift will have to come off too?

Once again thanks for taking time to assist.

IIRC you said they were ok, so no.

Easier fer sure.

I do not think so(discinnected I think) - I ain;t got one!

Regardless of what path thee takes, this time make sure the bearing loop goes OVER the spring on the porkchop.
