Saw guards and arbors Mark V 500

In January, I purchased a 1981 Shopsmith mark v 500. It had the wrong lower guard. I finally located both the correct lower guard, (505628.) Can someone direct me to the instructions for putting the pieces together correctly?

There have been several Upper & Lower Guards made for the Mark 5/V with the original table system AKA 500 over the years. Yes, they are different than the Guard set for the Mark V 510/505, 520 and other Mark Models and will not work on the Mark V 500. Lower Guard 505628 goes with Upper Guard 505627. That set can be seen below.

The part circled on the Upper Guard is called the Shoe and is commonly missing when found at online auctions. Without the Shoe the Upper Guard cannot be used.

The 505627/505628 Guard set was replaced by Saw Blade Guard Assembly 505875 which is the set below.

Later an upgrade came out for that set changing it from the 1-1/4" dust port to two 2-1/2" dust ports. This was the last Saw Blade Guard set made for the Mark 5/V 500.

There was an earlier Saw Blade Guard set made for the original Marrk 5 which is shown below.

It has some similarities to the 505627/505628 Guard set but the dust chute is square.

Back to your original question. Below is a PDF of the 505628 Lower Saw Guard instructions. Unfortunately, the PDF I have of the 505627 Upper Saw Guard instructions is too large to post here.

Those instructions actually show it being mounted on a 1960's Mark VII but fits the same on your Mark V. Once the Lower Guard is mounted with a blade in place it is not difficult to get the Upper Guard correctly in place. It attaches to the Lower Guard with the "L" bracket and the Splitter slides on over the screws. Align the Splitter with the Saw Blade, tighten the screws and it is all set. Once aligned the Guards as a set and the Blade can be removed and later remounted having the same alignment.
