Help Needed with Jointer

I'm making a little trip later this month to pickup a 10ER and happened to notice a 4E jointer in the same area i was going to pick up. But there seems to be "extra" parts I just don't understand. I've never had one of these jointers before, but I'm confused.

It is listed as a 4E, and it does have a pulley drive, but it also seems to have some extra flanges and tube mounting. After asking for some extra pictures, I think the data plate says it's a 620, but I don't have the expertise to say what's right or not.

Ignoring the fact that I don't have any of the other hardware needed to run it even if it is compatible with the 10ER, would it work?

Russ will chime in with more details but, that is not a 4E. However. it can be mounted like a 4E. That is an early model for the (at the time) new MK 5. That is why it has the tube mounting holes. Those early models still had the mounting holes (bolt holes) to mount it with the model 10 jointer mounting hardware. The one pictured has those holes on the side opposite the pulley. One is next to the data plate and the other one is to the left.

The tubes are for mounting on a MK 5 and it is sitting on an SPT accessory stand. Neither of which are needed to mount on the Model 10. It looks like the manual is included so it will show the missing parts. The bad news is the missing parts are almost impossible to find. It took me years to obtain all the parts to mount a 4E on a model 10. The good news is you can still use it. Just make a stand with a lower shelf for a motor and it will work fine.

As John Burger noted previously, it’s really hard to find an intact mounting kit for a 4E jointer, but since the one you’re referencing is an early 620 (looks like a’54 model, based on the adjustment handle style), it may actually be easier to mount on your 10er!

Here’s an alternate mounting method using the Power Mount Adapter Kit that was a post-production accessory designed for the 10er to allow users to run all those new Mark 5 accessory tools.

Admittedly, these original kits are either very expensive or really hard to find, but there are plenty of homemade solutions that have been created based on this method.

As has already been said it is a Model 620. The link Ed provided has some good information on setting it up as a stand-alone tool as John suggested can be done.

Now a little Magna Jointer history. The Model 4E came out in, I believe, 1953 made to mount on the Shopsmith Model 10E and 10ER. This required a special Headrest and bracket set with an additional motor pulley set up for the Model 10. It added a 5" pulley and included a new larger bore three step pulley and sleeve to the motor to drive the Jointer with a belt. Beginning before serial number 11458 (the lowest one I have seen for a 620) the Model 4E was changed to the Model 620.The only part that changed was the Base/Outfeed Table adding mounting holes for the Mounting Posts (additional new parts) to attach it to the Mark 5 introduced in March of 1954. As John said the Model 620 still had the holes for using the special Mounting Kit for the Model 10's. When the Model 620-C came out in 1958 the mounting holes for the Model 10's were no longer added. The Fence Lock parts and the Table Adjustment Knob parts changed around 1955. In the picture below the mounting holes for the Model 10 bracket are indicated by the arrows.

The Jointer you show has the earlier Fence Lock parts and the Table Raiser Knob parts making it a 1954 or early 1955 Jointer. A previous owner had added a face board to the fence which looks like it was added to lengthen the fence. It will reduce the width of the Jointers cutting capacity and due to the way it was made it looks like it limits the Depth of Cut the Jointer can make.

Now some good news for you, if it needs parts they can be purchased from Shopsmith. Any changes made to the parts and upgrades made over the years can be used on any Model 620 or later Jointer. The same is true for the Model 4E with the exception of the Dust Chute. Do know that some replacement parts need to be replaced as an assembly while others can be replaced individually.

One last note, the first Owner's Guide for the Model 620 Jointer showed a Model 4E Jointer mounted on a Shopsmith Model 10ER.
