Double Tilt Way Tubes.

I'm sorry but until I can make the measurements to define the length of Way Tubes and Bench Tubes being shipped with new machines (DT or otherwise) I will not be convinced that Shopsmith has made such a change.

Maybe an owner of a new DT could convince me otherwise but until that happens the Bench tubes are 52 3/4" and the Way Tubes are 52".

I have a DT but mine is a conversion from my original 510.

And the way tubes are installed with equal space off the ends of 5/16" each?

Not on any of my machines. The bores for the Way Tubes are 2" deep. That means a 1/8" gap total.

Me too! After thinking about this a bit, I recall that my OEM DT Bases are atypical. See this post and photos: viewtopic.php?p=306415#p306415 My theory has been that SS ran out of castings and engineered this as a workaround alternative, using single tilt castings. But do they have different geometry compared to others? It's a theory...

That reply simply does not reflect all the previous posts regarding original(52 ") and new(52 5/8") tube lengths and different(original vs double tilt) end casting bores.

Which castings(original or dt) are 2" deep?

I am not attempting to address all of those posts. I speak only to that equipment in my shop; that equipment that I can touch, feel and measure. If you have a different version don't be surprised or alarmed if your measurements are different.

What are your DT measurements? You have never posted that information.

The upgrade manual, see 5 on page 10, says that the left to right movement is about 3/8" and goes on to explain how to center it out. Looking at Figures 17 and 18, I'd estimate the 3/8" number looks a bit optimistic. This is exactly how I measured my total gap, and the lines were 5/8" apart.

The objective of this exercise is to center the tubes on the castings as close as possible. At the end of the day what difference does 1/16" or even 1/8" one way or the other matter as long as the set screws fully engage the tubes?

I guess the real question is why didn't SS make the castings with stops in the proper place for the length of the tubes.

Thank you for this. Mystery Solved...I believe. It appears that I was sold a DT Upgrade Kit prior to some changes being made. I believe mine consisted of the older castings (with 2" deep Way Tube Bores thus no gap). Shopsmith using older version castings in stock. My upgrade manual is also different than what you posted here. Thanks again.

I learned from this experience. LESSON: Don't jump too quickly to be the first to purchase! I did the same thing with the DC3000 Upgrade. After I purchased mine Shopsmith made significant production changes. What I have is not what they are selling as DC6000s today.
