Yet another "Goldie" Restoration

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
Just received another Ebay package. I was able to pick up a datto insert and a molding insert. The molding insert was even in the origianal packaging.
They are so clean, I just need to wax them. Yay!

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
The picture above shows the Dado Insert that has the slot long enough to use the Saw Blade also. The other insert is the Router/Shaper insert. It's nice that it includes the starter pins. Some sellers don't always know what the really have. The Molder Inserts for both the 500 (right) and other models (left) are shown below.

The paint I used for the Bench Tubes is a gloss silver.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
Yes, I mislabeled it. I was able to get the molding insert also. Correct me if I am wrong, but you can use the router/shaper insert for the drum sander also?

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
Nice you got the Molder Insert too.
Looks like you found an early Shopsmith Drum Sander. The machined aluminum Drum Sander is from the Model 10E late 1940's era. It was replaced by the cast Aluminum Drum Sander we still know today. The first cast aluminum Drum Sander made until 1953 used a smaller 1/4" set screw which changed to a 5/16" (using a 5/32" Allen Wrench, AKA the Shopsmith toolbox) in 1954 for the Mark 5. Those different Drum Sanders are shown below.
_ .
Note the set screw size difference in the cast aluminum ones.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
I guess I can live with the smaller set screw.
On another note, I cannot find Rustoleum Gloss Silver anywhere. They do make Gloss Silver Custom Chrome and a Hammered Silver.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
As you can see in my photo above, my Goldie has more of a hammered appearance.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
I looked at my Goldie I have waiting to be restored yesterday afternoon. The Bench Tubes are painted silver but are not glossy. The same silver paint and finish is on the Bench Tubes of the Mark 2 I have waiting to be restored. That gloss level could have changed with age. Rust-Oleum has silver in several finishes including Metallic and Hammered. The OEM silver paint on the Bench Tubes is not a Hammered Finish. Metallic may be the closest to original and I believe is what I used on my previous Goldie Restoration. Hammered finish paint has the plus of hiding imperfections in the surface. On the two Mark 5 Greenies and the Mark 2 I have restored I didn't paint the Bench Tubes since they came out looking great after rust removal and polishing.
Of course, the finish of any of the parts is up to you and is what makes it yours.
