Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
No fun having to take the Retractable Caster Assemblies back apart after reassembling them to fix the Foot Pedal. Been there, done that.
The gold paint is looking better than I thought it would. Not as yellow as I expected it would come out.

No, but it is what it is. I should have checked them better.
I think the Gold matches pretty good. When I have redone Hallicrafters radios in the past, you just had to try to get it close. Legend has it, they just used whatever the paint dept. mixed up that day.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
What's the best way to figure that out before I put it back together?

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
Looking at the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in shades of gold on various new Powermatic machines (both between machines and between different parts of the same machine) I think companies still do that!

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration

That said that is not not always obvious.
Take the foot pedal(crank) for instance. In addition to the upside down problem is the rotational positioning relative to the cam lobe. The foot pedal arms are not equally spaced. Two spaces are closer than the third. The normal operation is to depress the first arm of the closely spaced which applies the smaller od of the cam against the pistons(cam follower). A additional depression of the second arm of the closely spaced results in the large od of the cam pressing on the piston. The third arm is closely spaced to the second, but going forward the spacing is far greater between it and the first arm. This greater spacing allows the cam shaft to rotate back down from the highest point to the low point(resting) of the cam.
In addition there is the left/right version difference. Rotation is reversed.
I know of at least one forum member that simply gave up trying to figger it out and just drilled new holes to make it 'work'. His name shall not pass my lips, but his post can be 'discovered'.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
Looking at the picture below may help you understand what JPG is describing. The front Retractable Caster Assembly is currently in the retracted position. The first arm is outward at about 45 degrees angled up ready to be depressed raising the assembly to the first lifted position. Once done the second arm will be in the position to be depressed to raise it to the top lifted position. Raising it to the highest position will put the third arm in the position to lower the Shopsmith back onto the leg ends. Lowering it will rotate the Foot Pedal nearly one-half revolution ready to raise it again. Cams should be positioned to follow that pattern.
_ .
The above Retractable Castor set is the current version with the Foot Pedal attached farther away from the cam that allows clearance for the 3" Wheel Upgrade.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
JPG and Russ, I really appreciate the help!
So I was able to get it set right. Turns out I just had to swap the shafts from one side to the other. The marks I made on the shafts were correct, so my guess is at some point the PO took them apart and put them back together wrong. They are now correct, so no harm no foul.
Now on to the carriage and table trunnion.

Re: Yet another "Goldie" Restoration
Check why the 'left' rear leg is off the floor by itself.
The foot pedals appear to be in the low rise position.
All 4 legs should be slightly off the floor.
