Bandsaw tire keeps comming off

Post by tprowood »

I have a SS 500 Bandsaw. Just going thru adjusting it, cleaning it, etc. I replaced the upper tire. It seemed a bit worn, and there was a new rubber belt from the previous owner. Everything seems to be working well. However, the upper belt keeps comming off when I run it. I tried a 1/2 and 1/4 inch blade. I didn't Glue it on. Any ideas?

Rubber tires typically need glue. Urethane ones don't.

You might consider getting a set of the blue tires from bandsaw-tire-warehouse on eBay. They're supposed to be the best. I've just installed a set but don't have enough runtime to have an opinion.

I've never done it so no personal experience. I *think* the rubber ones from Shopsmith (if they still sell them) come with the glue, meaning I have no idea what sort of glue to use.

I found this old thread:

I have never replaced tores on my SS bandsaw, but I had the same problem on an old Craftsman that I was restoring. I just used weatherstrip glue from the auto parts store and cleaned both parts with xylene before gluing. Still holding 3 years later.

I cleaned it with acetone today, going to get glue and see if it resolves the problem. Thanks

See the PDF on Bandsaw Tire replacement at the link from here on the Shopsmith site below.

https://www.shopsmith.com/_files/ugd/d5 ... a728a4.pdf

As it says in step 11
Spread the adhesive evenly and take care to not use too much in one place.
This part can be a bit messy.

I followed the directions, however, when I turned it on today ( after 24hrs of letting the glue set), the tire popped off after about 1 minute of running. The tire is new. Could the wheel be damaged somehow?

Sorry you are having trouble with it. The glue should be the type that bonds rubber to metal like vehicle weather strip glue. When the tire came back off was the remaining glue adhering to the tire or the wheel? Could it be the wrong type of glue? Some foreign substance on the wheel or tire could be the problem causing the glue to not adhere to the rubber of the tire or metal of the wheel. These are guesses as to possible causes. I have replaced several glue-on rubber tires on Shopsmith Bandsaws without a problem. Others may have additional insight as to the cause.

As for wheel damage a visual inspection should reveal any actual damage. Was the Wheel surface clean of any foreign material? No oily surface? It needs to be clean bare metal.

I used this cement https://www.permatex.com/products/adhes ... e-5-fl-oz/

Both surfaces were clean, I scrubbed all the old glue off the wheel with acetone. After the tire came off, there was virtually no glue residue on the tire, which tells me the glue did not bond with the rubber surface.

Do you remember what glue you used?
