Looking for jointer manual (Jointer "C" , model 555483)

Hi, everyone. Just acquired two new (to me) Shopsmiths. One is a Mark V 510, the other is a cut down Mark V 500 (not sure if it's considered a shorty). They are a bit of a mess. I spent this morning lubricating the headstocks (both are running pretty smoothly now) and cleaning/waxing the way tubes (still have some work to do but they are much better). Already using advice from these forums so thanks in advance!

I still have several hours of cleaning before I can begin use but I know I need owner's manual for the two SPTs: a scroll saw (model 555220) and a jointer (model 555843). The scroll saw manual I can buy on ebay, but the only jointer manuals I see are for different models.

Am I looking at the wrong model/part number? Anyone know where I can find the owner's manual for this one? (see attached)

That's the current joiner model. Don't know why joiner manuals aren't available to download or even buy from their website. The exploded diagram in the parts page should match your machine.

Anything in particular you need to find out about?

Want to make sure I keep all my fingers intact! LOL

Just general setup, alignment, adjustment, etc. I've never used this type of jointer before.

I really had to fiddle with the eccentric posts to get the jointer lined up to run at all.... Not sure I'm doing it right.

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

As Ed said yours is the current model. They just launched the new website this week so things are apparently still missing. That includes the current and an older Jointer Owner's Manual. You could call Customer Service to try to order the Jointer Owner's Manual and Reference Guide for model 555483 which is P/N 556076. You could use an older Manual, but it would not include more recent changes. The basic operation and setup is the same although Manuals from the 1950's and 1960's would show the Jointer with Straight Mounting Posts as opposed to the Eccentric Mounting Posts now used.

The Scroll Saw Model 555220 was Shopsmith's first and is gray. It had two different Tables used which varied where the Blade Mounting Block was located. The two different Tables used had different Table Inserts also. This is a case where it is helpful to know which version yours has. The Gray Scroll Saw was replaced by the Teal Scroll Saw. It had differences compared to the Gray Scroll Saw. The Blade Mounting was different but was an upgrade for the Gray Scroll Saw. Many of the parts were different between the Gray and Teal Scroll Saws so some replacement parts are not interchangeable. Both of these have been discontinued and Shopsmith now sells the Excalibur Scroll Saw.

To help you identify which Model 555220 Scroll Saw you have they are shown below. First is the original Table followed by the second Table.

The original table model above has the Teal Blade Mounting Upgrade installed. Its original Blade Mounting parts on the upper arm would be the same as those on the second Table version below.

1. I'll call customer service to see about a planer manual--I have not yet done that.

2. I have the "second version" of the 555220 scroll saw.

The scroll saw mounting posts have "stop collars" on them to hold the saw at the proper height to align with the headstock. The planer mounting posts do not have that, so for the time being I had to finagle the planer up about 3/8" inch for alignment. That just doesn't seem right to me, hence my questions. I am not going to run this until I'm sure it's correct and safe.

With the second Table version, unless it has the Blade Block Upgrade, the removable Blade Blocks on the upper and lower arm ends sit in the spot on either side of the table to mount the blade in them. This gives the correct positioning of the blade in the blocks before attaching the blocks to the arm ends. Clear as mud, right?

It looks like your Scroll Saw has straight Mounting Posts the someone put on it replacing the original Eccentric Mounting Posts. The Scroll Saw only came with and uses the same Eccentric Mounting Posts as the Belt Sander and Bandsaw part number 5137779. The straight Mounting Posts only allow for vertical alignment while the Eccentric Mounting Posts also allow for some horizontal adjustment.

Just some helpful information about adjusting Eccentric Mounting Posts, when aligning an SPT on the Eccentric Mounting Posts the offset should sit on the Headrest End of the Mark V or other power source. The Horizontal alignment should be done first then with the posts locked in place in the Headrest the vertical alignment should be done. Once aligned the SPT can be removed and returned as needed while staying aligned to the Mark V or other power source. The Jointer does not sit very high off the Headrest when aligned with the lower Headstock shaft.

Besides the Mark V and other Mark series tools, SPT's can be powered by a homemade stand with a motor, Power Stand, Power Station, Crafter's Station and even the old Shopsmith Model 10E and 10ER. I have my Scroll Saw mounted full time on a Power Station for use.

Sometimes you may find the Lock Handle on the Headrest (SPT side) and the Base/Arm (generally the Extension Table side) of the Mark tools misaligned. One side of the threaded block may be out farther than the other in the Lock Handle when removed from it position. To readjust them turn both blocks back into the Handle, one is right hand threaded and the other is left hand threaded, to even them out before putting the Lock Handle back into the Headrest and Base/Arm ends of the Mark tool. This allows even lock pressure to be applied to both posts of the SPT or Extension Table.
