No Call List

Post by JPG »

What happened to the national and state "no call lists?"

AIRI the purpose was to prevent entities from calling any one on the list UNLESS they had a previous relation with them and it was THEIR responsibility to check before cold calling.

It is that time of the year when "brokers" are inundating me with several calls daily re medicare annual REenrollment..

It is possible they are 'off shore' and the list is not enforcable?

I have had to resort to not answering any calls from a number that My phone does not have a name associated with it. I am sure this has caused missing calls I would have wanted to answer.

Same here. The spam calls seem to come in waves. Not sure why. Anybody I know who wants to get a hold of me shows up on my caller id anyway. Don't answer 3/4 of our landline calls. Anyone else still have one?

I have a Google Pixel smartphone, and Pixels have a feature called "Call Screen" that has pretty much eliminated spam calls as a problem for me.

Here's how it works, at least as I have it configured. When a call comes in, the phone app first checks to see if the call is in your contact list. If it is, the call rings through immediately. But if the caller isn't in your contact list, a "Google assistant" voice will politely ask the caller to state the reason for the call before it attempts to connect you. Almost all spammers hang up at this point. But if it's a legit call, the caller will almost always give a reason for calling, at which point the phone app gives you the option to take the call. Or you can let it go to voice mail.

I find that legit calls from numbers not in my contact list are very rare. But when it happens, and if it's someone that I know or do business with, I'll add the caller to my contact list right away. Then the next time they call, it will ring straight through.

JPG,

I tried the various DO NOT CALL LISTS. There is the federal one and I think one or two other associations that have lists that supposedly try to disseminate your desire to the various marketing groups for large corporations. It helped a little when these first came out, in my experience, but then everyone just started to return to business as usual when they saw there was really no teeth behind the legislation. Also caller ID spoofing is rampant as well and easy to do masking the spammer. I used to have a landline and a cellular number. On both I would individually block each number which was time consuming, but somewhat effective. My solution now works fantastic for eliminating spam calls. I only have a cellphone now which happens to be an iPhone. I set it so that only phone numbers in my contact list ring my phone. Any phone numbers that dial me from outside of my contact list go straight to voicemail and few spam or legit companies seeking donations, etc. actually leave a voicemail - so I rarely know I received any spam calls anymore. Look for "Silence Unknown Callers" in Settings. So, I receive NO spam calls now. The only frustrating thing that happened A LOT this past fall was that I was inundated with political related text messages. I should have turned on the feature "Filter Unknown Senders" which should have stopped that. The only annoying thing with using these phone features if someone legitimate contacts you and they are NOT in your contact list then they get sent to voicemail so you have to hope they leave a message so you can call them back. For me, not a big deal and well worth it to cut out all of the distractions of spam phone calls. Hope this helps.

JPG,

Suggestion: IF you have a landline drop it. IF you have an Android phone, Dennis explained above how to do something similar on it to what I described on my iPhone. IF you don't have a landline or cellular phone and someone is spamming your tin can, then cut the string. ;)

Yes

Especially when a Person is waiting on an Important Call.

I had an incident last weekend that required me to wait on a call from an Officer of the law.

Not my fault. :D this time ;)

There was property damage at my other shop.
I answered all calls and finally got the call I was waiting on today.

I used to have "Silence Unknown Callers" enabled on my iPhone -- it was great! But my stepdad passed away and my mom has dementia so now I'm handling things for her and getting calls from all kinds of numbers. I had to turn of silence unknown callers and the spam call floodgates are open again.

There are other 'devices' other than a landline, android phone, iphone, string/tin can . . . that actually connect to the phone system for voice communication. They simply do not have all those fancy smancy 'features'. They are 'telephones'.

Sorry to hear of your Mom's dementia.

I have been through this with my wife's extended family.
