What do I need for my lathe? 10ER

This is where a headstock? would go??
It is 5/8”. What do I need to be able to turn bowls?

Good morning and welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

The Arbor shown in your picture is the universal 5/8" one but missing the Spacer, 2 machined Washers and the Nut. There is also a 1/2" Universal Arbor. The Arbor will need to be removed from the Quills Spindle for Lathe Turning. Hopefully the Arbor is not stuck on the Spindle. The picture below shows the complete 1/2" and 5/8" Arbors.

As for what you need for bowl turning there are a number of choices. There are two sizes of Faceplates. A 6" Faceplate for larger turnings and a 3-3/4" Faceplate for smaller turnings. An example of those two is shown below.

Also popular are adjustable Chucks. I have a Nova Chuck (very popular) and a Strong Chuck. Sorry I don't have a picture of either of those but an example of an adjustable chuck is below. The Adjustable Chucks are not Shopsmith accessories, but all other pictured Lathe accessories are.

There are other Lathe accessories that will be useful for other Lathe Turnings. The Lathe Drive and Screw Lathe Drive both go on the Quills Spindle. For the Tailstock there is the Shopsmith Dead Center and Live Center plus a Tailstock Adapter for the Drill Chuck. Examples of the Lathe Drive and Screw Drive are below. The left ones are from the Model 10 era and on the right are the current ones.

Here is the good news. Although the Shopsmith Model 10E and 10ER were made from 1947 through 1953 they can use accessories made today for the Shopsmith tools like the Mark 7. They have the same diameter 5/8" Spindle so most current Shopsmith accessories will fit. You can use a new Lathe Faceplate for Bowl Turning just a well as one made during the time the Model 10's were made.

So what is the arbor for?

Re arbor, think anything that resembles a grinding wheel or shaper cutter. i.e. thingies with a 1/2" or 5/8" hole used for mounting that then do something(cut/shape) when rotating about the center of the bore.

The Arbors shown below from my first post are, as JPG said, to mount anything to the Shopsmith Quill's Spindle. Be it from the Saw Blade or Dado Set to a Grinding Wheel and many accessories in-between. The first 8" Saw Blades for the Model 10E introduced in 1047 had a 1/2" bore which soon changed to the standard 5/8" bore. Depending on the thickness of the item being mounted to the Arbor either the two Washers would be used for example with a Grinding Wheel or the Spacer and 1 Washer would be used when mounting a Saw Blade. No matter what is being mounted to the Arbor always have the machined recess of the Washers and Spacer facing the item being mounted.

There was a separate Arbor or as it was called the Shaper Adapter used specifically for Shaper Cutters. The 1/2" Arbor shown above could be used for Shaper Cutters too but having a shorter threaded shaft could be a problem when Shaper Collars are desired to limit the depth of the cut.
