Dewalt 735 planer issue

Post by Coonhound007 »

I have a Dewalt 735 planer with a helical head. Cuts nice except I get scars on the bottom of my board. We have literally cleaned the bed, sanded it to 400 grit. It’s smooth as a baby’s rear. I’ll still get scars that are deep and run lengthwise. It is invariably on my best finished surface while I’m dimensioning it all to final. It’s as if there are multiple burrs sticking up through the bed but that is not the case. I have been using this planer for years. It’s in great shape, clean and I’ve never ever had this issue. There is no chip build up inside the head. The rollers have been wiped and the blower pulls chips away fast. I
I am at a loss as to why I’m getting these scars on my face down board. I’ve ruled out chips, the bed surface. Any ideas?

Hi Coonhound007, sorry I can't help you with your Dewalt planer issue. You might get better info if you were to ask your question on a Dewalt forum. This is primarily a Shopsmith-specific forum, not Dewalt. You might get lucky and someone here might have an answer, but you'll probably have better luck on a Dewalt-specific forum.

Good luck!

It does sound like a strange issue. Are you using any infeed/outfeed roller stands or other supports that could be causing this? Perhaps a photo may help us to brainstorm with you. Would be interesting to see your setup and what the marks look like.

Do the scars occur on every piece that you pass through the planer?

If it is certain that there would be scars, I'd pass a test piece through the planer but turn the planer
off half way through the cut. Does the scar stop in the middle of the cut.
