New member introduction from NE Oklahoma
Picked up my first MK5 today, appears to be mid 1990s production. Seller visited with me at length regarding its history and completeness. He said some of the accessories were 510 upgrades and not sure of the significance of that. Most excited to have a full-size lathe since I have only owned a bench top spindle type lathe before. Still in the back of the truck so will see soon as I get one of the sons-in-law to help me off load it. Will be nice to get it into working shape and start getting rid of some of my H/F devices.

StoneyD,
Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum and congratulations on getting the Shopsmith Mark V.
If it is a mid 1990's Mark V you can tell when it was made by looking at the "serial number" on the sticker located on the Belt Cover. For any Mark V made after December 1987 that "serial number" is actually a Date Code of when it was made. Below is an example of the sticker for one made June 17, 1994.
_ .
As to the significance of the 510 parts vs. a Mark V 500 it has to do with the model of any given Mark V. Until 1985 when the Mark V 510/505 was introduced there was only one model of Mark V. Up to then was the Mark 5 or Mark V with the original Table/Fence System. When the Mark V 510 and 505 were introduced the original Mark V became the Mark V 500. The pictures below show the different models of the Mark V.
The first is the Mark V 500 with the original Table/Fence System. The Mark 5 originally came out in 1954. It started as Mark 5 but in 1980 the number 5 was replaced with the Roman Numeral V on the tool itself. Mark V had been used in advertising and printed materials as early as the 1970's.
_ .
Next is the Mark V 510 introduced in 1985. It has larger tables and adds floating tables for extra work area.
_ .
At the same time the Mark V 510 was introduced so was the Mark V 505. This uses the same Table/Fence System as the Mark V 510 but does not have the Floating Tables, Connecting Tubes or Support Legs. Those can be added making it a Mark V 510.
_ .
IN 1999 the Mark V 520 was introduced. It uses the same Tables as the Mark V 510 but has the Pro Fence using Fence Rail Extrusions instead of the Fence Rail Tubes of the 510 and has the wider Pro Fence.
_ .
Any Mark 5/V can be upgraded to the other Table/Fence Systems or even downgraded for that matter. I have a Mark 5 Greenie (called that because of it paint colors) from 1957 that has been upgraded to a Mark V 510.
If you have the original aka 500 Table system many 510 parts will not work with it. If your new to you Mark V has been upgraded to a 510 there are parts/accessories from the original/500 Table System that will not work with it.
The Bench, Conventional Headstock and Tailstock are the same on the above Mark V models. The Carriage is different for the Mark V 500 than the other Mark V models. The Upper and Lower Saw Guards made for the original Mark 5/V 500 over the years do not work on the other models. Due to the design of the Upper and Lower Saw Guard for the Mark V 510/505 and 520 longer Saw Blade Arbors and the Sanding Disk Hub are needed. Using the longer Saw Blade Arbors on a Mark V 500 can interfere with some the Lower Saw Guards.

Re: New member introduction from NE Oklahoma
Thank you, Russ, for the excellent explanation of about the MK5. Today, with the help of the owner's manuals that came with this I have been able to determine that there are no missing or damaged pieces to the basic MK5 and that the previous owner had purchased a retrofit kit # 555135. The band saw and the jointer need some TLC due to the rust and mud dauber nests everywhere. Function wise all seems good except that when I turn the RPM dial it begins to take more effort to reduce the speed once I get to the area marked Drum-Sand (letter K). I have not opened the cover yet perhaps it will be more evidence of the mud daubers making their home inside. Thanks again for your reply. (Tried to post photo of the unit but message says file size too large)

Re: New member introduction from NE Oklahoma
StoneyD,
Glad to hear it came with an Owner's Manual. Before trying to run your Mark V any more I would suggest some maintenance. Information on that should be in the manual. Cleaning out the inside of the Headstock of any dust and debris followed by lubrication of the drive parts may be what is needed to make the speed change smoother. Lack of lubrication on the moving Sheaves of the Motor and Idler Shafts is a common cause that makes turning the Speed Control Dial difficult.
As for posting pictures use a photo editor to reduce the size (pixels) of the picture before posting. My cell phone takes pictures that the file size is around 3 times larger than can be posted.

Re: New member introduction from NE Oklahoma
Russ, great advice about doing the maintenance before running it anymore. Did the 50-hour checklist and it's running like supposed to. Now on to the SPTs that came with it, get rid of my Harber Freight devices, and ask the sons-in-law to move it into the work shed for me. Thanks again for all your help. Haven't made storage place for it yet in the work shed, so that seems like a safe place to keep it out of harm's way.

Re: New member introduction from NE Oklahoma
Your Mark V is earlier than first indicated. Serial Number SS165571 was made in December 1983. It's also the reason the Serial Number is on the Vent Plate. The sticker I showed in my previous post only began with Date Coding in December 1987.
The model your Mark V is, based on the Table/Fence System, is 510 or 505 depending on if it has the 2 Floating Tables and related parts which are not shown in the picture. Since your Mark V predated when the Mark V 510 and 505 were introduced yours was upgraded.
The Bandsaw and Jointer don't look to bad rust wise. I don't see the Table Insert for the Bandsaw in the picture. Hopefully you have it but if not a new one can be purchased from Shopsmith or sometimes can be found used. Currently the Table Insert for Cast Iron Tables part number 502736 is on sale and the original price was $39.95, Sale price is $33.96 saving 15%. The sale price could end at any time. The picture below shows a Cast Iron Bandsaw Table with the Insert.
_ .
If you look at buying used parts do compare the cost of them plus any shipping for the total cost compared to buying new parts from Shopsmith which currently is not charging shipping on most parts.
If you didn't get the Owner's Manual for the Cast Iron Table Bandsaw a PDF copy can be downloaded from here on the Shopsmith website at the link below.
https://www.shopsmith.com/_files/ugd/d5 ... 7d45c6.pdf
Unfortunately, the Jointer Manual (part number 556076) is not currently available for download or purchase. If you need one, we can help find a PDF for you to download from somewhere.

I don’t know if this will help (different model #) I’ve got a PDF but it’s too large to attach here. If needed I’ll need some assistance in posting / making it available…chapmanruss wrote: ↑Sun Apr 27, 2025 12:37 pm

Steve,
That PDF of the 1964 Jointer Manual is available through the Forum on Everett's Google Drive along with many other manuals that he has restored and made available to us. They can be found in the Maintenance and Repair section under the topic Shopsmith Large format Drawings, Illustrations and more which will be found near the top of the page. Once there click on the My Google Drive link.
StoneyD,
Although the 1964 Jointer Manual may be earlier than your Jointer was made not much changed with the Jointer from then until 1984. That is when the Jointer Infeed Stop was added. Other later additions include the current Cutter Head, Feather Guard, Pulley Guard, Rear Cutter Guard and Chip Chute. Any of those changes can be added to any of the earlier Jointers with the exception of the Infeed Stop (requires cast on part on the Main Jointer Assembly, base outfeed table) and the Chip Chute cannot be used on the Model 4E Jointer. Operation, Alignment and Maintenance are basically the same.
