Guess What’s Making a Comeback?
We’ve been working on something special… a new take on a Shopsmith favorite. It’s almost time to bring the legend back.

Yay, The Mark 5 is back!

Re: Guess What’s Making a Comeback?
I saw the ad. However, the original post from SS was a limited time offer of the original head stock only. Not a complete MK V. Did they change their mind? Hmmm...

Re: Guess What’s Making a Comeback?
The ad campaign is a bit confusing and now a bit more so. Today I see an ad for a Mark 5. Or is it really a Mark V. Would the only difference be what they call it.

Re: Guess What’s Making a Comeback?
They have it advertised as a MARK 5 with Conventional Headstock and it appears to be what was last called the Mark V 520S. What it will say on the tool itself remains to be seen. Will the Vent Cover Plate on the Belt Cover still say Mark V or are the making new ones saying Mark 5. I guess we will refer to them as the new Mark 5 like we refer to the new Mark 7 as opposed to the older Mark V and VII.

And what do we call the "old" Mark 5?

Re: Guess What’s Making a Comeback?
It is the old 520s without all of the included attachments that it used to come with, ie. Sanding disks, Lathe accessories. It was done that way to bring the price down. If you look, they have those as accessory packages.

I would not call a 520s legendary.

Re: Guess What’s Making a Comeback?
JPG,
I will still call your Mark 5 a Goldie.
AllenH,
From what I found in the online catalog they are planning to sell the Mark 5 two ways. The first is an All-Inclusive complete Mark 5 package while the second way to purchase it is as a MARK 5 with Conventional Headstock & Sawing Package and both are similar to the way the Mark V 520S was being marketed along with the short-lived Mark 4. You had a choice to purchase a Mark V 520S complete with everything that originally came with the Mark V 520 ready to perform all five functions (except Lathe Chisels) or a "bare bones" unit for which you could purchase packages. Each package included the parts needed to preform that function. As an example, the Lathe Package, if I remember it correctly, would include the Tailstock Assembly, the Lathe Tool Rest Assembly, the Lathe Drive and the Lathe Cup Center. Over the years the Lathe Chisels were generally sold separately from the Mark 5/V or as part of an accessory package to complement the Mark 5/V tool.
