quill pinion installation

how far does the quill pinion insert into carriage head--is there a proper setting to insure proper backlash? thanks

Insertion depth will not affect backlash.

How about 'as far as it will go'?

i can't get the quill to feed into head stock--my question is the end of the non-fluted pinion restrict the quill insertion

The pinion needs to be rotated so as to allow the pinion to engage the rack on the quill.

Also the quill feed(pinion) needs to be pre tensioned about 3 1/2 - 4 turns before inserting the quill.
