A new configuration?

Post by rdewinter »

I have not tried this yet but would an extension table fit into the carriage assembly and lock into place? If it would then you could add a second carriage assembly to the left of the headstock, lock an extension table into it, mount a flat sanding disk on the main shaft extending out of the left side of the headstock, and clamp the lathe chisel sharpening guide on the extension table. That way you could use the lathe and sharpen your chisels at the same time.
OR
mount the worktable in the carriage assembly and do the same thing.

Idea feasible?

This is exactly what you described but it certainly looks as though it does everything you want for. Check post #18. Nice job, Fixit.

The problem I see with mounting a way tube carriage on the left side of the headstock will be that you can no longer mount the special purpose tools (bandsaw, jointer, etc.) and run them on the left side (where you are suppose to) because the carriage will prevent you from moving the headstock close enough to the SPT and the power coupler will no longer reach them.

Seems like it complicates and limits using the SS in the vertical mode.

How often DO you use that 'missing' 5 1/4" at the 'top' ??

I agree. The photos in the following linked thread show my MarkV in the vertical mode with a second carriage (and main table). Taking off the main table allows the carriage to go even farther left (or up).

When I took these pictures I was concerned about overall stability in the vertical mode. With the weight of the main table and trunnions that high, the Mark V is somewhat unstable. I would NOT RECOMMEND using it this way.

Without the main table and trunnions on the second carriage, it is quite stable.

Nor can I think of how one COULD do anything useful with BOTH TABLES attached in vertical mode.

Keep in mind, that us folks with '500' size tables ARE under a handicap not shared by 510/520 folks. An 'extra' surface is VERY desirable to us as is all those extension tables is to Y'ALL.:)

I guess I never checked. That 5 1/4" doesn't really sound like that much unless I'm about 1/8" short.:D
However, you are correct. It is a rare instance where that 5 1/4" would need to come into play.

I stand corrected. If you do need the use of a second carriage on the left side of the headstock, this extension for the drive hub in the photos will work.

For me, I have found no need for the extra carriage, not yet anyway. I always use my
Delta 8-inch grinder for sharpening my lathe chisels due to all the different angles I grind on them, and the Shopsmith sharpening guide is a bit limited, especially when sharpening gouges with a fingernail/side grind on them.

I haven't found the need to mount my sanding disk on the left side of the headstock.
