Sandpaper Grit Size For Sharpening Planer and Jointer Knives

Post by GG0452 »

I just ordered the SS Jointer and Planer knife sharpening kit that includes a conical disc and three grit sizes of sandpaper. It is my understanding that SS recommends using the 150 grit for sharpening the knives. What have people experienced using this grit size? What finer grit sizes have people used and what were the results? If i go finer that the SS sandpaper size I can use most any grit size as I will have to cut it out to fit the conical disc. Thanks for the information.

I remember years ago Nick Engler said that, when using the jig blade holder across the conical disk, repeated passes across the 150 grit would become lighter in metal removal, and function more or less like a finer grit. I think it's very adequate.

I have used the 150 grit many times sharpening Planer and mostly Jointer Knives with good results. I simply use light pressure.
