Need help to figure this one out...
Found this for sale. The owner says he has had it since "day one" and has been stored for 24 years. He ios including everything seen in the pictures. Half the stuff I dont recognize. I assume it is a Mk V 500 but Im concerned about the other stuff being missing. The price is good, he is 500 miles away but I dont want to get involved in a scavenger hunt for parts
If you can see anything thats not there and should be, please let me klnow
I appreciate your time

OWnewb;
From the pictures, it looks like you have found a very nice machine...seems well preserved for its years. The only essential items that I notice are missing are the upper and lower saw guards.
Hope this helps,
Ed

oldwoodnewb,
Yes, that's a 500 configuration. As Ed noted, the saw guard is missing in the pictures, perhaps he has that elsewhere, something you'd definitely want if you want to use the table saw function.
Have you not found something closer to you? Ideally with a 510 or 520 table configuration? Also, a lot of these were sold with a bandsaw that is pretty decent. 1000 miles of pricey gas, lodging, food, etc. will add substantially to the price for what appears to be a $300-400 setup in many areas of the country.

Re: Need help to figure this one out...
Jeff,
I agree with Ed and Roy's evaluation. Seems to only be missing a Saw Blade Guard set from what it would have come with from the factory. There was more than one version of Saw Blade Guard sets made for the Mark V 500. You did not say where the Mark V or even you are located. 500 miles each way does seem to be a long journey to get it. I live in Northwest Oregon and have several listed for sale just on craigslist near me. A Mark V 520 or even a 510 would add more Table configurations possibilities that the Mark V 500 with the original Table System cannot do.
This Mark V has the "B" Headstock made prior to 1991. The Main Table was made after the beginning of 1980. The serial number would give a better indication of when it was made. There is the block mounted to the back side of the Table Tie Bar and Post for the Upper Saw Guard which is part of the set in the picture below. That one is the early version of this Saw Blade Guard set having only a single 1-1/4" saw dust port. The later version has two 2-1/2" saw dust ports.
The Jointer is a nice addition to the package. It has a bit of surface rust which should be relatively easy to remove. The jointer is new enough to have or has been upgraded to have the Rear Cutter Head Guard.

Re: Need help to figure this one out...
Thank you guys for your quick responses and information. I was impressed with the amount of stuff included, seems like lots of accessories. To answer specific questions, I live in Southern California (Palm Desert, near Palm Springs) and the seller is located in Citrus Heights, CA (Northern California). He wants $399 for all of it, I thought it was a great deal. One thing I noted, he posted a video of running up the RPM's with the speed controller, however he then goes and shuts it down at high RPM's, not turning it back to low. Thats something I was trained never to do. So yes lots of gas $$, motels etc to go get her
So here is my dilemma and I would welcome your thoughts. I found a machine local, 5 miles away. It's a Goldie, bought in 1963, and he's the original owner. It is in perfect condition for its age, has many accessories, some new in the box and the jointer. The owner has taken meticulous care of it and wants $500 for everything. I'm just not sure about the Goldie and being so old. Are they as reliable as a newer 500? The costs would be the same, as I wont incur expenses to go get it
I don't know what to do..

Oldwoodnewb:
$399 sounds like a really good deal for the machine with the accessories shown. As for not turning the speed dial down, agreed it is a good habit to get into, but my understanding is that as long as your shop wiring has the amps needed to start the machine in the Fast position no harm done. If the electrical service is less than, I think, about 20 amps, you will trip breakers.
The goldie is probably worth a look, since it saves you the long drive, but it may not have the 2 bearing quill or the larger horse and an eighth motor and probably does not have the poly v belt upgrade. These are essential, in my opinion. You might be able to take advantage of the new Shopsmith deal to have the headstock re-conditioned, but I am not sure if the Goldie qualifies for that. Looking at the Shopsmith website it appears the re-condition program may only apply to old greenies with conventional headstocks and Power Pros. I would check with Shopsmith before counting on the Goldie qualifying.
If it were me, I would make the long drive and go for the greenie.

Re: Need help to figure this one out...
Now knowing your location, I found a nice looking, clean 510 for $500 on FB Marketplace in Buena Park. Includes a bandsaw and jointer. Many other listings in the LA and San Diego areas for everything from 10Es to Mark 7s and prices from $100 to $6000.
There's a heckuva deal in Vista for another clean looking 510 with same as above plus dust collector and scroll saw for the same price.
A 510, doesn't appear to have any SPTs, I Palm Springs for $650.

Re: Need help to figure this one out...
A 1963 Goldie would have come with the 1-1/8 HP motor and the Poly V Drive. The change to the 1-1/8 HP motor occurred between March and April 1961. I have an April 1961 Goldie with the 1-1/8 HP Motor from the factory but still with the Gilmer Drive (special C unit) and another Forum member has a March 1961 Goldie with the 3/4 HP Motor and the special C Gilmer Drive. The change to the Poly V drive occurred soon after that. Having the Poly V drive is a good improvement over the Gilmer Drive. The second-generation Gilmer Drive with the clutch helped solve the belt snapping problem but over the years the clutch system no longer functions as well without some maintenance and not an easy task.
Unless upgraded any Mark 5/V prior to October of 1984 (starting with serial number 190000), would have a single bearing quill.

Re: Need help to figure this one out...
Roy,
To finish up the story, I bought the one you found in Buena Park, CA, just 2 hours away. Its a 510 with bandsaw and jointer. Seller was an actual woodworker, always a plus. Lathe chisels included, all the tables and extension legs and upper and lower saw guards. Bandsaw and chisels are like new.
So thank you for you assistance in guiding me to a great machine

oldwoodnewb,
Glad you found a good, clean, better machine much closer to you. Hopefully it was well cared for and will give you many years of enjoyment.
Here is a good post with new owner maintenance and cleaning tips, if you haven't already found it: viewtopic.php?t=7092.
