I've been waiting for it seems months for the backorder on planer knives. Mine are too short for any more sharpining and I wonder if any on the forum knows of any other source?

According to the manual, blades that measure less than 11/16" (.688) should not be sharpened. Have yours been ground down that far? I have a spare set that needs to be honed on the conical sander that measure .728" wide. I don't believe that they have been sharpened, certainly not more than once.

Actually, just a few thousands is all you need. If there is a "nick" on the edge, don't try to grind it all out, all you need to do is offset the blade laterally about 1/32" in the cutter head to eliminate the raised line in the wood. (This was a tip from Nick) My final sharpening operation is to, by hand, lightly hone the bevel on an 8000 grid waterstone, and then carefully rub the back on the stone to remove any burr - result - scary sharp!
The beauty of the conical disk and the sharpening jig, other than the convenience and economy of doing it yourself, is that the sharpening just takes off the minimum amount of metal, giving you much longer blade life. If you send out the blades to a sharpening service, they may grind away too much metal.

Got an e-mail today from SS - planer and jointer knives are now on sale. Planer knives are $70.47. I just got new SS planer knives in today. They were ordered a couple of months ago. This officially fulfills all my backorders that were outstanding. Yours should come in before long, hopefully.

Like Chris, my planer knives arrived today (3/14). Tjhe width of the new blades is .750". Apparently the set I had on hand, measuring .728", which had been sharpened once by an outside source, shows just how much metal a professional sharpening service can remove.
Believe me truthfully, from now on I will sharpen my blades myself using the conical sanding disk. I will get much longer life out of a set of blades.
