Sanding is the least favorite part of woodworking for most folks. The level of difficulty involved in sanding a project may at times influence my choices of a project to build or at least cause me to slightly modify the original design to make sanding easier.
One of my many motto's is "Rustic is your friend". :D
On the other hand even "rustic" need not be sloppy. :)
My almost 93 year old mother-in-law has a wooden toy box made for her by her grandfather when she was quite small. It is made with 1x12 tulip poplar and if you look at it in bright light you can see the plane marks where he planed the boards all down by hand from rough sawed lumber. We are glad that he didn't sand all of those plane marks out of the surface...
After she married the box became the home for her family pictures.
She really loves that old box and it is one of the few pieces of furniture that made the trip from our house to the nursing home when she had to move there after a bout with cancer. Every plane mark shows a grandfather's labor of love.
He also took the important step of carving his name in the bottom of it. Kind of a shame he didn't date it too.

Now I'm wondering if the covered wagon toy box I built for the Granddaughter will have the same legacy? Name and date burned in under the finish.
