Follow the lessons in the book. If you are very new to woodworking, you will find them valuable.

To learn even more (and a few projects for your Shopsmith), the following link to Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone (the Shopsmith "bible") can be of enormous help.

Pictures of my new Shopsmith

Post by wholeshoe »

Here are some pictures for everyone. Also the "quill?" moves very hard. I read in the the maintence part of the manual I need to go in there and blow the sawdust out. I can't imagine just sawdust making it move this hard and if it is caked in there that tight that blowing it out with an airgun will do anything.

Another question if this is a 520 what am I missing? I took pictures of all I have except for the lathe rest and the out feed table. Also the blade looks like a ripping blade can I get a crosscut one at Lowes or is there a good all purpose saw blade?

I downgraded the quality of the pics quite a bit but you will get a good look at it.

It IS a 500! When trying to move the quill, have you released the quill LOCK? It is the large 'wing nut' on the same side of the headstock as the power switch. See last pix above. The saw blade is a combination blade. I do NOT see the UPPER saw guard.

I have tried that and it still moves real hard and jerky. So it is just a 500. What does an upgrade buy me and whats the damage? I hope I got a good deal on this at $350 cash. I think i did, it more than doubled my power tool inventory.

I havent fired it up yet myself as I want to make sure I go about it right and I wont have any real time until saturday. They guy did start it up when I bought it though and all looked and sounded good. I jiggles and push pulled the power units shaft looking for bearing play and there is none.

It is a very late model 500 and a nice looking one at that.

Clean that puppy out good and get it lubricated before you do much else. It seems like you have a real winner here. Treat it well and it'll serve you for a long time.

Read that manual and then read it again. Keep it handy while you are learning - it is one of the better reference manuals I have ever used.

Any recommended maintainence procedures not covered in the manual? I see I need paste floor wax for the tubes and a light sewing machine oil for other components.

Anything else?

I recommend Johnson's Paste Wax (Original Formula) and a Turbine Oil available at Ace. The oil comes in a plastic bottle with an extension spout that makes it real easy to get the oil in the right place.
