No, you are not limited to only SS blades. With the 5/8" adapter/arbors, you can use any 10" blade with a 5/8" mounting hole. I use Freud blades and have purchased several of the adapters so I have mounted blades already to go. The new thin-kref blades seem to cut easier so I have switched over to them. Amazon is a convenient source for Freud blades as well as several other internet vendors.

ShopSmith does have nice saw blades also.

Thanks everyone. I went out at lunch and cleaned the shopsmith to the book and adjusted the quill. The quill now works great. The set screw was set too hard!

jetobey did you get my email?

I even drilled a few holes afterwards for a try out! They drilled wonderfully. It beats the heak out of my cordless drill. Once I get a top saw guard I can get down to some serious work.

I plan on following the course in the book but it might be too tedious to finish it. I hope not.

If anyone has a used guard I am in the market!
