Just in case anyone is keeping track of this old post here is the update. Due to arrive on 4/7/09 is this item:
http://www.woodcraft.com/product.aspx?P ... lyID=20433
They have/had an offer of free shipping for orders over $75 and since my order was about $104 it shipped for free. The other item was this:

So now I can sit and think about how much I like or dislike the center system before I give it a try.

Tail stock center sets ????
Moderator: admin
Hi Ed! Sorry, didn't see this thread until now. Don't know why I missed it. However I would like to post that the dead center is the one I prefer. When coated with beeswax, It stays in place and there is no burning. Anyway, the tail of my turnings is usually waste.
I got a Shopsmith live center for Christmas and have used it several times. I've yet to see any advantage. One disadvantage of the live center is it is IMHO klunky! I was turning dowels from oak and found I could not finish that end of the piece. Didn't want to put a tool inside of the outer edge of the center. Using the dead center, I was able to turn inside of the circle of the center with the skew. That's because I could see that circle! Can't see it with the live center.

Hi,
My items arrived yesterday and I put the stool together this morning and made the mistake of bring it in to the kitchen for my wife to try.... now it is looking like I might have to order another one for my shop....
On the live center front I degreased the parts and decided to shoot a couple of pictures with the shopsmith centers so you can get a feeling of sizes and how this works. With zero time of use it is hard to say how they will hold up but they do have a good feel to them and bearing feels really nice and smooth. So for now I'd have to say I'm happy with them.

I assume it is oblivious which are the two shopsmith centers and if you have questions about the other system you can look that up at:

Ed,
I think you will like this set. I saw one in the Clearwater store and it almost came home with me. Nova is now making everything in China but the quality looks to be better.
The Jacksonville Woodcraft only carried the Wood River (?) set which looks to be somewhat worse than useless.
