I have ordered an upgrade back in September and am still waiting, but that's another thread . what I would like to know is what additional items will I have to purchase in order to use my existing attachments. I read something about new arbors? Can I not use the same ones I have. I understand the table inserts will be different. What else? I have the bandsaw, the sanding disk, the dado set, the jointer and a few other things that come standard when I bought back in 1984 or so. I'm just corn fused!!
When I did my upgrade, it included 1 saw arbor and 1 sanding disk conversion hub. The additional things I know of that may be a problem are the mortising attachment, the shaper fence, any and all saw table inserts, anything you may have that attached to the old fence.
I purchased additonal saw arbors, table inserts, sanding disk conversion hubs, and modified my shaper fence to work with the new table.
There are probably other things but these are what popped into my head right now.

None of the SPT's will be effected, i.e., your jointer and bandsaw will work with no modifications.

Buying US made products will help keep YOUR job or retirement funds safer.
There should be nothing else you would have to buy to make ALL of the attachments fit and work. You will get a new, larger table. Here's the page from the Shopsmith manual http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... ofence.htm
Whoops! just thought you may want to buy the 5 foot extension tubes. But That can wait until you see if you will need them for your type of use.

What you have will allow you to do an awful lot in your shop. But let me tell you something that I am still learning. You will always need something else that you don't have. This is an affliction of the hobby. It plagues every wood shop where there is any sight/smell of sawdust. You won't get over it but don't worry, it does not hurt but it can be contagious so get someone else in the shop with you. That way you will have company.
Those things that you NEED. Get them now, don't wait like I did.

Amen Dusty!!!!!......................I'm finding it harder and harder to ignore Shopsmith's many email specials. Now with two Shopsmith shops, 1400 miles apart, it's double jeopardy!
Not being content with this situation, I've now purchased a nice used 510 for my nephews out in Denver. I keep finding things that they will "need" so the orders keep being placed. Ah.......think of it this way, I'm investing in their, and Shopsmith's future.
I'm proud of you 8iowa! Stimulating the economy without a government bailout!:D And Dusty is 100% right as well: there is always something else you will have to have in your workshop. Every time I think to myself "after this next purchase, I'm happy and don't need anything else", sure enough here comes something else. It's the same thing with my other hobby, model railroading. But here's an interesting little factoid I'd like to share but I think you already know this: people with hobbies live longer!!

Hey, I'm counting on that. I need at least 10 more years of active shop work in order to recoup my investment. Either that or start selling all of these "give away" projects that I've been doing since we moved back to Tucson.

Just picked up my second SS today and brushed it off and waxed. The guy I purchased it from waxed it last night sat down with me for 2 hours and told me all about it. Intersetingly, he has 2 shops on here in New York and one in AZ. He has made his NY shop smaller and only uses the bandsaw, scrowsaw, router, and a few other small tools. The SS just didn't fit is current plans. Told me he has only 100 hours on this one.
The upgrade to the 520 is worth every penny. Shopsmith has done an excellent job of keeping attachments universal. Enjy
