My 113.248320 Craftsman 12" bandsaw makes a knocking noise. It is comming from the lower wheel drive. I've replaced and tightened the motor mounting bolts and the pulling housing. The belt tension is correct. The motor freewheels very smoothly. I think it might be one of the bearings on the drive wheel shaft. Any advice on how to get to them and replace them?

Hi,
I'm a non shopsmith bandsaw owner too... so I'll give you a couple of other things to think about but sorry I've never had to replace the bearing(s).
Step one put on a new blade and see what happens.
If you have had the tension on and left the saw for a while that way you will have a flat spot on the tires and every revolution you will get this thump.
If the blade has a twist or kink in it you will have the same thing.
If the weld on the blade was not made right or not smooth you get the same thing.
Tires if they are the black rubber type need replacing every 8 - 10 years.
Make sure the pulley's are aligned and tight on the shafts...

Then is it only the bottom drive wheel operating without the blade? I have found that any bearing noise can be felt when rotating the bearing by hand and feeling the bearing shaft next to the bearing with your finger tips. I only find bearings that will make a knocking noise are ones held in place with a set screw that is too tight. If a bracket is used, I find the bearing will made a loud rumbling or screeching noise when going bad. Normally there will be play at the shaft end when the bearing is going bad. Check that the bearing shields or seals has been damaged as this can cause strange noises.chasj wrote:Thanks Ed,
Been down that road. The noise is prevalent even with the blade removed. The pulleys are aligned. Ill keep you posted.

Is this belt driven? Belts will make a knocking noise when a piece is missing on the inside of the belt. This can happen to older motor belts on the Shopsmith headstock.

Have you tried to take the belt off and then see if you hear anything when handing spinning the bottom wheel?
You can also check to make sure the belt is not hitting anything along the way... sometimes the sound travels to the housing and makes it sound like it is coming from a different place then it really is.
I have a different model but mine looks to have a set screw and key keeping the wheel on and the bearing seems to have a retaining ring, bearing and spacer held in with a screw head attached to the housing... yours might look totally different.

Thanks for the advice.
Took the tilt head off the table (an ugly job) and found the hidden set screw for the driven pulley which felt a bit loose. Since I was so close I decided to remove the bearings ( The shaft and bearings and the bearings and housing are a press fit. Without a press I used a hammer) Bottom line the bearings seem fine but I will replace them on general principles if I can line up the right tooling. I did find some rub marks on the pulley housing from the belt . Additionally there were two locations on the inside of the belt that had what appeared to be a line of beads. Don't know if they are from manufacturing or abuse.

Found the problem
I've found the answer to the knocking noise. Upon disassembly I found that the driven pulley had migrated inboard and was rubbing against the pulley housing. I didn't have to totally disassemble the machin...I found out after the fact...If you look under the table you will find a access hole in the pulley housing that will allow you to loosen/tighten the pulley set screw.
