Poly V Belt Placement - A question
Good morning, ladies and gentleman
I have a question about the proper placement of the PolyV belt on the drive shaft on a 1984 Mark V. The SS documentation says the belt should be placed on the pulley in the 3rd groove (later Mark V's use the 2nd groove).
My question: how should I interpret that? Should the PolyV belt be installed so it's first 'V' is in the 3rd groove (i.e. there will be 2 empty grooves to the right) or should the PolyV belt be installed so it's first 'V' is in the 4th groove (i.e. there are 3 empty grooves to the right)?
I am attaching a picture but, in words, my belt was installed (by the previous owner) so that 3 grooves were visible on the right hand (RH) side of the pulley (all references to right and left are relative to the view looking from the front of the power head). This had the belt so close to the left that the left hand side of the belt was wearing a bit. I got in there yesterday and reset the belt so it now has it's first (right hand most) 'V' in the 3rd groove.

I.E. I am showing 2 empty grooves to the right.
Did I do this right?

That agrees with MY interpretation. The first 'Vee'(ridge) of the belt inserted into the third groove of the pulley.bobgroh wrote:Good morning, ladies and gentleman

Also of importance is the proper positioning on to the sheave pulley. Does it LOOK like the belt is straight to BOTH pulleys? If so GO!
None of the SS instructions say put to it in the 4th groove as your predecessor apparently did!;)

I know what I had been told and shown at a TA. I was told to have three grooves vacant. I came home and did that despite the fact that my poly v belt was located right where the factory located it years ago.
I have since moved it back to where your picture shows you have yours.
I moved it back because I thought I sensed a different sound and some over heating of the headstock (hand on top left of the headstock).

Poly V Belt Placement - A question
Yes, it is the way I always install the Poly-V belt to start.bobgroh wrote:Good morning, ladies and gentleman

This is another chicken or egg quiz. I place the sanding disk on the quill and turn it in the same direction as the motor turns the quill. I rotate the Poly-V or Gilmer belt for a few complete turns before checking for alignment. I find that I first install the Poly-V belt with 2 empty grooves on each side of the belt. Then install the idler shaft and eccentric bushing. I use a body washer on the screw that stops the eccentric bushing from extending past the back of the headstock casing. I seat the idler bearing and eccentric bushing againest the body washer and lightly seat the eccentric bushing set screw. Then I take slack out of the belt by rotating the eccentric bushing. I stand above the headstock and sighting down the edge of the Poly-V belt to the idler shaft pulley. The belt should be flat (straight down) againest the idler shaft pulley as it starts or comes off the idler shaft pulley. If there is a bulge on the side of the belt as it clears the pulleys then the pulleys are not in a straight line. If the idler shaft pulley appears to be more toward the end of the headstock casing, I will remove the eccentric bushing and idler shaft so I can move the belt one groove toward the back of the drive sleeve pulley leaving 3 grooves showing at the front of the drive sleeve pulley. I reinstall the the idler shaft and eccentric bushing and check alignment again. I can do this task many times faster than I can describe it.
I have a different method I use for the earlier greenie headstock belt alignment. This is for headstocks with no screw to restain the eccentric bushing from coming out or using the split eccentric bushing. Shopsmith made eccentric bushings with a cut (split) through the thinest part of the eccentric bushing. This allows the eccentric bushing to be compressed by the eccentric bushing bolt when tighten. I toss the 2 eccentric bushing retaining brackets that the eccentric bushing bolt goes through on the Greenie headstocks. I install the idler shaft and eccentric bushing. I place the eccentric bushing end and the idler shaft bearing end flush with each other. I make sure the Gilmer belt operates 1/16" to 1/8" from the back of the drive sleeve pulley by moving the eccentric bushing more into the headstock until this distance is reach while turning the sanding disk. No alignment is needed for the Gilmer belt. Then tighten the eccentric bushing bolt. If the Gilmer belt is allowed to operate with the belt rubbing againest the back of the drive sleeve pulley, the belt will become damaged on both sides of the belt. Do not rotate the belt in the opposite direction from the normal belt direction/rotation. I have not had any eccentric bushing movement after using this method. Most of the time, I drill a hole above the eccentric bushing into the casing (must be aligned very carefully to do this) and install a screw and body washer just to be safe.

Notice on page 4 step 2 a,b the options are SECOND or THIRD groove. "belt IN the 2nd/3rd groove".
2nd groove only with later 'rotating name plate' models!

I feel much better about the whole thing now. My own observation (the belt is on straight and does run well), the comments by others that, yes, my interpretation is correct and, lastly, the SS document which is pretty darned clear that my interpretation was correct. Nice details from Bill Mayo also as always. Thanks to everyone who responded. As always this is the place to go for answers.JPG40504 wrote:http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/prod ... cement.pdf
