Two bearing Quill

Post by rbenstead »

After looking a Ricks video on the two bearing quill upgrade. I have a question. He said that if the allen wrench only goes in about 4 inches that it has the second bearing. Which mine does. But if you grab the splined end of the quill I can wobble it around. I can't believe that if it had the second bearing in, it should do that. Shouldn't it be rock solid? The other bearing is in great shape. Also in the add it said the the upgraded quill can not be installed with a gilmar set up. How about if it has the poly belt upgrade which mine does? IF it has the poly V upgrade, it CAN have the 2 bearing quill. Make sure your NOT hitting a washer, that can be in the single bearing quill.

Bill Mayo's method for checking a quill's configuration.

Post by allsas »

Bill Mayo posted a way to determine if your quill is a two bearing quill. His method is to shine a light along the splined shaft and rotate the shaft. If the outer edge of the ring rotates it is not a double bearing quill. A quill with a double bearing will rotate the inner race but not the outer race. A single bearing quill will rotate a retaining ring.

Using Nicks method, I thought that a gilmer drive quill was a double bearing quill. Wrong. DOH.

Sorry, I couldn't find Bill Mayo's posting, but it was the last one in the topic and it works. >>>>> I found Bill's post: <<<<<
