DC3300 bag change and maintenance

I'm changing the bag on my DC3300 dust collector for the first time.

I've managed to break the bag clips that hold the bag to the dust collector. The new ones arrived recently. :-)

I decided to take the hood off and look inside - curiosity getting the best of me.

I there were mountains of sawdust on top of the motor assembly. While cleaning/vacuuming said mountains, I noticed that the seal on the back of the motor assembly was missing on the top.

So - is it worth taking the motor assembly out and replacing the front and back seals? If so, should I take the opportunity to check the fan for damage?

How much trouble am I asking for in thinking about taking the motor assembly out and checking the fan?

I thought I remembered a thread with pix showing the motor assembly removal and fan replacement - but wasn't able to find it myself.

The first step of removing the motor assembly looked to be removing the front hose connector.

Removing this required removing the 3 screws holding the ShopSmith logo plate and then removing 4 screws holding the hose connector to the body.

Once this was removed, I was able to see into the motor assembly and view the fan.

It looks fine - so no replacement needed.

Now - just deciding whether to replace the front and back seals.

To add to jmoore65's question. Should the DC hood be taken off and washed in the washer? Or is it best to let the dust build up for a barrior on the inside?

I have heard of people laundering the bag but I do not and I do not believe that you want to. The crust that builds inside of the bag provides part of the filtering of fine particles.

I agree with Dusty. When I first replaced the small (original top bag) with the larger sized One Micron version I noticed the dust collection was not as great as it is now that a crust has built up on the inside. I suggest allowing it to build up. Fjimp

I may be mistaken, but it is my understanding that the 1 micron rating is only true AFTER a "cake" has built up inside the bag. In other words; no, do knot wash the hood.

Jim,

I am glad that you found no fan damage! As far as the seals go, it is just my opinion, but I think all effort should be made to prevent dust getting in the motor, so I wood recommend changing any faulty or missing seals. What does ShopSmith customer service suggest?
