Drive sleeve assembly plastic gear replacement

Anyone tried to replace the plasic gears on the Drive sleeve assembly. My quill starts to slip when it is exented fully and I believe it may be the the plasic gear on the drive sleeve may be worn I have not opened up the headstock to look because I don't want very much down time. I don't have to have the quill extended that far most of the time so it is not an issue. Thank in advance. It also looks like shopsmith only sells the assembly but if I recall correctly I think I saw Nick just pop it off on one of the sawdust sessions. I have to go look a that also.

I have never seen the teeth on the plastic Drive Sleeve gear stripped on any Shopsmith I have repaired. Since the quill shaft splines are always inside the full length of the plastic gear, the problem would be present regardless of quill extension. Therefore, I have found that the Poly-V belt may need tighting when the quill shaft slows down under a load. If the Poly-V belt has 1/8" to 1/4" deflection, then I would believe the motor floating sheave may be stiff or sticking causing the drive belt to slip. This is a good time to do the sleave lubrication too.

By dropping the motor and putting the headstock in the drill press position with the quill housing removed, a large long flat blade screwdriver can be used to remove the plastic gear hub from the drive sleeve shaft.

I start the plastic hub onto the drive sleeve spines, start the quill housing one or two teeth into the headstock, put a flat piece of metal between the quill shaft end and the plastic hub and seat the plastic hub onto the drive sleeve with the quill feed handle.

As is usual, a little bit of observation(looking) is worth much more than a lot of 'speculation'! It also eliminates UNNECESSARY anxiety. Save the 'worrying' for after a cause for a problem HAS been determined!:) 73's?
