Feed Stop Issue

At this point I would be very frustrated. I would be inclined to remove the entire Quill Feed Assembly.

However, given the difficulty you had removing the setscrew putty, it is reasonable to assume this is the way it was assembled at Shopsmith and therefore the way it should be.

Maybe you should just practice an old saying. As long as it works, don't fix it. Did you take any pictures.

One last-ditch check is to look one more time at the Spherical Washer. That is the one that is closest to the pinion-gear teeth in this posting:

That spherical washer can be put in about 4 ways (pointing either direction, and lying on either side of the headstock casting). Only one of these ways, the way shown in reible's photo, will do the trick as intended. I've seen a headstock or two that had the spherical washer not bearing as intended inside the headsock casting.

Take a look at the Second pix in the first link above.

I do not know why this 'problem' exists "since a 2 bearing quill update" UNLESS the shaft etc. was removed. Since the set screw was NOT cleaned out, prior removal during quill replacement seems unlikely(Did someone else do the quill replacement? Did that person fill the set screw with that nasty stuff you had so much trouble removing?).

As mentioned b4, is the quill LOCK wingnut SNUGGED in? Is the spring washer present?(between the wingnut and the sliding sleeve) The quill shaft WILL slide in and out if not snugged up!

Moving to the other side - >>>>>>>>>>>Does the retaining clip butt up against the outside of the quill spring housing when slight pressure pushes it there?<<<<<<<<<<<< Does the quill spring housing extend out from the headstock about 1/8"? Does the flat washer rest against the retaining clip? Does the inside serrated washer rest against the flat washer? Is the groove on the shaft(in which the inside tab on the serrated washer rides) cleaned out all the way to the retaining clip?

P.S. If all the above is 'true', only pics of your 'example' will show us the way to 'resolve' this(other than 'being there'.

I finally got out the camera, which I guess I should have done in the first place.

Picture 0574B shows the fully assembled feed stop mechanism. There is a space between the dial indicator and the quill spring housing. Pictures in PTWFE, and the way I remember the machine when I got it new in 1981/82, there should not be a gap. Picture 0577B shows all the parts in the mechanism, which I believe are the correct parts in the correct order.

Does everyone else have the space, and am I just plain wrong in my thinking of how it should be?

As a side note: Notice the quill spring housing setscrew does not have a plug. I thought it should be wax, based on the owners manual I had. I could not get it out, and I asked questions about how to remove it. It turns out that in my 510 Upgrade documentation, I found a passage describing the plug as grey lead, and should be dug out with a pen knife. So the lead plugs were installed when I sent the headstock to SS for the two-bearing quill upgrade.

Looking at your photo 0577B, you can see why the gap exists. It is established by the gap between the retaining rind and the headstock housing. On mine, the retaining ring is flush against the headstock.

This is normal. If the space between the Quill Stop and quill spring housing is a problem for you, try snugging down the Quill Lock Handle to where the quill will still retact and you should see this space disappear.
