Hi, I am looking for a lathe chuck with jaws that will allow me to turn the inside of bowls by holding on to the to a tenone on the outside of the bowl.
It looks like most chucks are made for 3/4" or larger spindles. I have a 5/8" on my 10ER. Is there an adapter that is available to use a larger spindle on the Shopsmiths or 3/4 or 1 inch or are you really limited to the chucks that have 5/8" adapters available. I have found one on Ebay but it is the only one I have found and not self centering which is what I want to get.
Anyone out there in Shopsmith world who has a lathe jaw setup that they want to sell please email me offline at sasjzl@earthlink.net.
Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

Woodcraft is running a sale on the Nova Precision Midi Chuck.

the sale package includes the 50mm jaws, pin jaws, and bowl jaw sets
you'll need to buy a separate spindle adapter. I think this is the right one:

the folks at the local Woodcraft are quite happy to support SS owners. that seems to be the common report here on the forum.

nova adapter
oddly enough nova does not have an adapter for the "midi" chuck. the midi chuck comes threaded with 1"x8tpi or 3/4"x16tpi. pennstate industries sells an adapter that is 5/8" plain x 1"-8tpi that will work. that nova adapter works in other nova chucks but not the "midi". been there, done that.

Lathe Chuck
Jim:
You might check out the Grizzly Catalogue on line. I bought one self centering chuck, without shaft adaptor, and the salesman at the Springfield MO. store found the adaptor for my Shop Smith, and also one for my sears.so now I am ready to go on either machine.
Best of luck,
Clement

Penn State set me straight
Thanks for the tip on Penn State. They had an adapter to go from 5/8" to 1" whatever TPI and a very reasonably priced self centering bowl chuck that should allow me to get to the inside of my very first bowl.
Thanks,
Jim Lee
