I have done a lot of "micro-adjusting" in that manner over the years. The handy thing about adjusting that way is that if anything becomes too uncooperative you already have something in hand to smash it with. :D
I too no longer get to watch them. They used to be on PBS. Watching them convinced me that I didn't want to bother with having a miter-gauge slot on the router table.

I did not equip with Shopsmiths in spite of the setups but because of them.
