Upgrade to 520 issue

Post by matajugador »

Currently working on getting my SS in top shape again. Thought I had a 510 because of the extra tables it had, and was confirmed by SS.

Trying to upgrade to the 520, and Im thinking maybe I have to buy new tables, as the new fence attachment doesn't seem to screw on right. (Im a noob so it could be that as well!)

Can anyone take a look at these pics and tell me if I need to buy a new table, or a new brain?

Thanks guys!

Ben

Hi Ben - Glad to see you back in action with your machine and back on the forum! Been wondering how you've been getting along!

As I'm not a 520 guy, I can't be of much help here, but I'm sure Dusty and others will come to your aid. However, I can say you have a 510 table for sure and the conversion should work. I understand it can be a little tricky!

Best Wishes!

Ben,

As charlese has already said, you have the right tables and the 520 rails should attach with no problem.

What I don't see in the one photo that appears to show the 520 front rail are any spacers.

I'll go look through my photo library for some pictures that depict the underside of the table with mounting hardware. If you purchased an upgrade kit, I am certain that you have what is needed.

Hopefully this thread (post #6) has the info that you need:

https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=2371&highlight=main+table

This is a post script. The following image was taken for a different purpose but it shows the spacers that are used (required) between the table and the rail. This same hardware combination is used for every bolt/nut used to mount the 520 tables (main/extension and floating).

I have the spacers, but there are no threads for the button head screw. the directions are pretty confusing and the parts numbers dont match anything anywhere, not even in my original manual.

Charlese, thanks for the welcome - business has been down and so we downsized. Now I have very little time or energy to devote to woodworking, but my wife wants me to finish my nightstands before boy #3 comes in October. I wanted to get my machine solid and then I just have 2 drawers to go before the final sand and finish.

I do not see why your 520 rails will not fit. The mounting holes in the 520 rails align with the existing holes from where you removed the 510 rails. I was going to take a couple of shots of my 520 table in the same orientation as your pictures but my battery needs replacing on my camera so I did a search for 510 to 520 upgrade and came up with a front view picture of what the 520 rail looks like when mounted to the main table. The directions that come with the upgrade kit are not the best to understand and I have to admit that they had me puzzled for awhile but finally got everything figured out. Hope this helps.

I don't know if this is the same issue but when I upgraded my 510 to a 520 the upgrade kit didn't fit. For one the holes in the table didn't match the ones in the new rails. I think I remember an issue with the screws holes (tapped or untapped, I can't remember - getting old). Anyway, there are two upgrade kits: one for those made before 1986 and one for those made in 1986 and after. My Mark V was a 1986 model but required the earlier conversion kit because they apparently used a few of the older left over tables in 1986 - I needed the older kit. Anyway, the phone support folks figured this out but only after talking to the folks in engineering. They shipped a new kit and it fit just fine. As I said, don't know if you have the same problem but I do know there are differences in the upgrade kits. I recommend you give SS a call.

I might be confused. Your comment regarding button head screws has me. The screws that mount the rails go through the rail, then through a spacer, then through the table, then you attach a lock washer and nut under the table. Nothing is threaded except the bolt and nut.

I discarded the instruction sheet but then I would probably do that if it was an award winning document.

Just realized that there were two sets of instructions that came with the upgrade... The 520 upgrade instructions (old tubes) have me all kinds of confused.

Looked at the posts link above for the rip fence upgrade and it looks like it is a better manual to look at. Going to have to see how well the flathead screws fit into the counter sunk holes on the new rails...

back to the work table, I will keep checking on the forum, thanks for the help guys Im going to go back over it with the other instructions!

EDIT: thanks Dusty, thats about the conclusion I am reaching!!!

1) As Dusty said, the first pix clearly shows a 510 table/rail. I would add that the rails are the later(post1986) version.

2) the tapped/clearance holes in the table are one of the differences between the old/later 510 table/rails(older tapped, newer clearance)

3) The newer 510 version used washers and nuts(with integrated lockwasher) to secure the rails which had a threaded stud which was inserted through the hole.(The earlier version had torx screws which screwed into the tapped hole in the table(s).

4) The original nuts and washers are used in fastening the new rails to the table. The 'kit' should have both new bolts and spacers.

5) Since you have a 'surplus' of tables, perhaps you have more than one 'version'(tapped/clearance table holes)

P.S. KEAKAP: Bet you won't have this confusion! :>}

Here are a couple of other photos that depict the spacers, nuts and washers.

These might be redundant but I hope they help somewhat.
