I'm new here.
I have had an older Shopsmith for a few years now. Up until now I have used it only once or twice a year. Have oiled it like the video showed. But the motor housing gets so hot that I can't put my hand on it. Is this normal?
Also, I the ring that control the speed is not set correctly. Are these some reasons I should try to dismantle it and send the motor back for maintenance?
These questions may have been ask but my search did not turn up any answers.

No, the motor pan should not get hot. It sounds like there is too much sawdust/crud built up in and around the motor. I would set the speed control to FAST and slide the belt housing to the end of the way tubes after removing the screws. I would walk the belt off the motor sheaves but not letting the floating sheave loose but allowing it to slide againest the fan sheave watching your finger tips. I would put some cardboard on the way tubes under the motor pan. Then I would remove the switch and push inside the headstock (do not disconnect any wires), then the 5 motor pan screws and drop the motor pan onto the cardboard on the way tubes. Place the motor pan, motor and wires on a table. Then remove the 4 screws holding the motor. Being careful with the wires and using a good bit of compressed air, I would blow out all the sawdust/crud from the motor while rotating the fan sheave and from the motor pan. This takes a while to remove all the sawdust/crud from the motor.
You can test the motor for heating by placing it with the motor pan on a table, turn the switch on and plug the cord into an outlet. Let operate of some time to see how hot it gets. You should be able to place your hand on the motor housing at this time.
