Tailstock, Can Not Make It Solid

OKAY, maybe it is old age but I was certain that someone had written about having difficulty with an unstable tailstock. I can not find that thread.

Nonetheless, I was out cleaning the shop, after cutting up all my MDF cut offs, and I spotted this. I had not thought about this being a solution to that same problem.

I sometimes do this when I need a real stable extension table. The wedge does not have to be driven in. Just tap it with a rubber hammer. This takes all of the lateral wiggle out of the tail stock.

Great idea Dusty. I never have experienced such a problem, but its good to know this if I ever did.

Interesting picture there Dusty. Your morse taper eccentric seems to be adjusted to the bottom if I recall mine is near the top?? You are making me thing if I have ever really tried to line-up my centers in lathe mode. Or is yours not set???? HMMMMM!!! Dusty you always do this to me you make me think ouch.. Thank you

You can relax. Mine most probably is not aligned. I had been experimenting (using) my tail stock for something other than turning. I had it disassembled and this is how it got put back together,

Great idea Dusty, thanks for sharing it. I'll have to remember this one. I have noticed the tailstock flexing sometimes when putting a bit of lateral pressure on it in certain turning/drilling operations.

If you are in reference to the wedges, the number is W555432 and they sell for $6.65 each. You pay the S&H. Hurry, there may be a B.O. list forming soon.

If I ever learn to do Sketchup, I'll just post the plans and you can build your own.

I join the others in thanking you for pointing out this solution. very nice as long as one is gentle with the mallet. simple and elegant is good.
