Pro planer vs thickness planer?

Post by jmilligan »

Are there any real differences between the two Shopsmith planers other than the mounting systems? For example is the thickness planer adapted to mount on a power stand (with belt/pulleys/motor) really different from the pro planer on its pro planer stand?

The stand mounted pro planer has more power and higher RPM. Other than that the two are the same.

The table on the Pro Planer is cast iron where, I think, the SS mounted planer table is aluminum with a stainless steel cover. Mounting and removing the Pro Planer from the SS could replace your daily work out on the weight machine. I know it is significantly heavier than the SS mounted one.

I don't know how heavy it is but I certainly could not put it on and take it off of the Mark V on a regular basis. I might not be able to put it on at all anymore. The last time I moved it, other than pushing it around on the wheels, was 10+ years ago. I don't do that anymore.

The jointer is starting to be a challenge.

It's not so heavy and is easier to get a hold of. Besides that, I store the jointer at about the same height as when on the Mark V (no lifting up or down).

pro planer versus planer

Post by papahammer8 »

the shopsmith planer mounted only delivers 3000 rpm to 4100rpm. due to the fact ur mk5 runs on a 1 1/8 motor. whereas the pro- planer runs off a 1 3/4 hp motor. at a constant 5750 rpm . hagd papahammer8
