Does anyone know the year when Shopsmith enlarged the access hole? Given the cobbler work that was done to increase the diameter leads me to believe it had one of the smaller openings.

Has anyone ever tried putting a Mark VII motor and switch assembly in a Mark V headstock? I have never really looked at them apart side by side.
I only have the one Mark VII in use and two I bought to have for parts. One of those was the butchered one I mentioned where the original innards had been gutted.
The Mark VII is a pretty cool machine in its own right other than a few limitations. The melting speed control cam can be cured. The brittle plastic rack gear on the top front tube can be cured. The only other thing I can think of is that it is said that in drill press mode the height that you can raise the headstock to is lower than on the Mark V. I can't speak to that because I have never used that one in drill press mode.
I do know that a complete Mark VII headstock will fit on a Mark V frame. The problem is that for most reversed operations you can only gain the maximum benefit by having the Mark VII table which tilts either way. Of course the Mark VII carriage and table will fit on the Mark V frame too. Even then you do not have the advantage of the left tilt frame. Why not buy a Mark VII and cure the cam problem and cure or ignore the rack gear problem and have it all.
I keep mentioning that the Mark VII really was brought out as a major upgrade from the Mark V. I believe that with a little tweaking they would have had a great machine. I believe that it would be an almost ideal starting point for the new power headstock...
Somewhere there is a thread here where I listed many of the improvements they made over the Mark V when it came out.

I think the access hole was 'added'. The holes for the locating 'pins' look different on later models. The top and bottom holes have been drilled as well as the outer circumference of the 'hole'. The hole appears to be the size of the 'smaller' access holes.
The motor capacitor is most likely in the dayton switch. To reverse 'switch', the control needs access to the leads connecting to the capacitor.
I 'BET' the motor has a ss type mount 'cobbled' from the original motor and screwed into the motor outer shell/frame. The motor MAY even have the original ss fan blade and 'end cap'. Like farmer, I would love to 'see' it.
P.S. as an after thought, It may even BE the original motor with the capacitor leads brought out to the dayton switch.

I'll pull the motor from the motor pan Saturday and put up some additional pictures. Was planning on doing it tonight, but came home to the new dog leaving a few "surprises" in the bedroom, then got tied up putting together my first 510. Someone mounted the casters on the wrong sides because the kick downs aren't on the same side as the headstock switch and carriage table adjustment dial.

Motor Pictures
Guys - got up early before my flight out this morning and pulled the motor out of the pan. If it was added later, they did a nice job as the SS mountings look - to my untrained eye - untouched and original. However, the power cord and forward / reverse switch appear later addons - the cord is held in by a screw-on retaining ring versus the molded plastic plug and there are some holes drilled behind the switch that appear to have been mistakes (you can see the holes in the first picture).
Open to everyone's thoughts and ideas!
