Miter guage width

Being new to Shopsmith, I continue to learn about the system every day. I have two Rockler feather boards. I discovered they don't fit the SS miter slot (slightly wider). I assumed that the slots were 3/4" wide. Is that because of the groove in the miter slot that holds the miter guage, cross cut table bar in place, etc?

What is the width I need to plan for in trying to use other saw accessories like a Delta Tenon Jig?

Welcome to the group.

The Shopsmith miter track measures .735" (47/64") but I believe SS advertises it to be a .725" track. The fact that the miter track is non-standard has been the subject of many discussions here on the forum. That has changed nothing. It is what it is.

Yeah, the miter slot is just barely non-standard.

You kind of have two choices:

1.) Buy the Shopsmith accessories, or
2.) Build your own jigs

I've been doing #1, but now that I ahve most of the basic pieces I need, I am starting to move toward#2. It's more fun and less expensive.

A third choice is to buy standard accessories, then try to modify them to SS use. I've thought about that a couple times, but I chicken out when I think about grinding down a brand new tool. Seems like a waste.

What you can do is:
1) make your own jigs with your own sliding miter bars to fit the Shopsmith miter slot or
2) make your own jigs and use Shopsmith sliding miter bars or
3) purchase jigs from other suppliers and replace the miter bars with Shopsmith miter bars.

Yes, the miter bars can be purchased separately.

I needed to make a sliding table the other day for a quick project. I had some window screen metal laying around (the one with the groove for the spline). I tried it and it fit the miter slot. So I screwed my board to it and now I have a sliding table...

I hope you are not going to tell us that this was for use on your Delta TS. It has a 3/4" miter track.

No. It worked on the SS. It might not of been super tight. But I got the job done.

How about the miter bars available through INCRA. They do have models that fit the SS. I have a INCRA 5000 that has a perfect fitting miter bar.

Incra has agreements with Shopsmith and ships Incra miter gauges with Shopsmith Miter Bars mounted to those products. Miter bars are also available from Shopsmith which can be used with existing miter gauges, sliding tables and any other Jig you might design yourself. I always keep a few Shopsmith Miter Bars on hand for jigs I make myself. Very handy to have. Incidentally Incra is as high a quality company to do business with as Shopsmith is. I find Mark at Incra is a wealth of information just as the customer service folks at Shopsmith are. fjimp
