Where to buy the gilmer belt?

Post by petik »

I recently bought a beaten up old greenie (1955 s/n#296263) and started fixing it up. I have a few items on order via ebay and otherwise, but the one thing I can't seem to find is the gilmer belt. The old belt was cracking pretty bad and when I removed it, I noticed it said Goodyear 507032 right on it. I tried looking on shopsmith's site, but can only seem to find the drive belt and the poly-v. I am not ready to spend the money for the upgrade to poly-v - especially since all the bearings appear in good shape. So I continued looking but for the life of me, I cannot find this item in any automotive store, or ebay or pretty much anywhere else on the web.

Could anyone help with finding one of these belts? Thanks!

Shopsmith has a listing as seen here:

http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/item ... =Find+Item

But it looks like it is available from them at this point.

If you're in a hurry perhaps someone here might have a faster way of getting you one. We are not allowed to do "selling" here but....

Anyway good luck with the machine!

Oh yea, let me say "Welcome to the group!", I see this is only your second posting.

Well that was a bit embarassing :o I looked through the whole headstock item index and the belt was in the most commonly ordered items section.

Like you said Ed, it does appear to be out of stock. I wonder if there's any way to order it straight from Goodyear...

Thanks for the help and for the welcome!

Shopsmith is the only source for the Gilmer belt. The Gilmer belt is a non-standard industrial type belt. When anyone is ordering a Poly-V or Gilmer belt, I would recommend ordering the motor drive belt too as it is also a non-standard belt and replace them as a set. In fact, I recommend that anyone who knows how and/or plans to replace the Gilmer or Poly-V belt have a spare set of belts available. When Shopsmith sells out their stock of a belt, it may take many months for them to get the next restocking order. I use belt conditioner (auto parts store) on all my belts I stock to help preserve them.

I've spent some time looking for after market replacement belts and have ordered and tested possible replacements for the PolyV and Gilmar and Drive belts. I have found no replacements for the PolyV and Gilmar belts and the only replacement for the drive belt I've found is the red twist link belts that you can build to length yourself ( no cost savings ).

Like Bill suggests, buy from Shopsmith and keep an extra set on hand in a sealed zip lock bag.

Actually, I did find the drivebelt on amazon for around 5 bucks. Just looked for a 26" V-belt with a 1/2" top and found one that matched dead on. Have been running it in my brownie for a couple of months and it runs great. I think it was a Gates brand...

Was that 1/2" top actually 1/2" and was it flat or curved across the 'top'?

Past problems prompted this question!

If you can post the part number, it would be helpful. I've ordered at least 10 different belts from different manufacturers and have never found a belt that matched a SS branded drive belt exactly. SS has substituted other belts from time to time when they ran out of SS branded belts but they have never been an exact match. They will work but your speed range will be off some.

The belt that I removed from my brownie a few months ago was a shopsmith brand. I went and looked through my past orders. The belt that I replaced it with was the Gates Truflex 2260. I am not sure if I'm allowed to post a link, but you can find it on amazon.

Now that I think about it, that was actually the exact same belt name and model that I pulled out of my greenie just a couple of days back, so it seems either shopsmith or the previous owner had put that belt in there and based on the wear it's definitely been used a lot.

I would say it is a flat top belt, I didn't measure the width, but the specs do say it is 1/2" wide.
