510 lower guard with a 500 table?

Post by dkerfoot »

I have a model 500 that I bought used. I never use it as a tablesaw because I have a Craftsman 21829 that I like very much. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00921829000P

But I use it extensively as a lathe, bandsaw and sanding station. The two make a great and very compact combination!

I have thought of upgrading to the 510, but after thinking about it, the 500 table is perfectly adequate to me for sanding & drilling.

I do not have a lower guard and want to use dust collection while using the sanding disks. I have one aluminum style sanding disk and one 510/520 long hub steel dusk.

Finally to the question! I'd like to add a lower guard for dust collection with the sanding disk. On eBay, there are more lower guards available for the 510. I know it won't be compatible with my aluminum disk, but is there anything to prevent me from using a 510 lower guard with my 500 table and my long-hub steel disk?

The 510 lower guard won't fit the 500 because the dust collection port interferes with the upper way tubes (don't ask me how I know that). You can either wait for an older 500 lower guard to show up on Ebay (which they do from time to time when someone decides to part out an older version) or purchase the latest and greatest upgrade directly from Shopsmith (see the following link). I have both and they don't collect 100% of the dust but are certainly better than nothing and much safer for the exposed blade below the table.

I am confused on how the waytubes would interfere. As I understand it, the waytubes do not change between the 500/510/520. Am I wrong on that?

I don't have a problem navigating the ShopSmith website for parts. I have spent $500 or so in the last year direct from SS, but as much as I like helping to support them, I also believe in reusing existing stuff when possible. Much less waste and pollution that way. I'd also like to not wait months for the back-ordered part to be delivered.

Can the aluminum disk be used with the 500 lower guard? I am assuming the long hub steel disk can not...

The table/guard mount is different. The table tubes are further apart. The way tubes are the same.

The long description on the 555167 says:

"Requires current, standard steel Sanding Disk (555143) for operation".

So - back to the original question. Can the 510 lower guard work with the 500 table? I'll never use it with a saw blade - only the sanding disk

Thanks - I do appreciate all the responses.

The posts below weren't satisfactory?

You're right, I meant to say "Table" tube (not way tube). And that's exactly how I know that the 510 lower guard doesn't fit the 500.

No they weren't. The original said that the waytubes interfered, but since they are identical, they couldn't possibly interfere. Correct?

The table tubes being farther apart does not necessarily mean that they would interfere. That is what I was seeking clarification about.

As far as the table/guard mount being different, that doesn't mean that it couldn't be used for sanding purposes. Again, this is why I was seeking clarity.

Now anmius has answered the question (which I appreciate!) and all ambiguity has been resolved.

Does this satisfactorily answer your question? If not, I'll be happy to clarify it for you - without getting snarky.
