dkerfoot,

I hope your question was answered ok,
Just FYI, here are some pictures of a home made dust chute used with an aluminum disc and also two pictures of the # 555167 mentioned by Reible used with a steel disc. I always wondered if the back half of this dust chute was the same as the back half of a 510 lower saw guard. Neither dust chute works perfect, but with a second hose from the DC 3300 mounted on the front, both work pretty good. I hope these are of some help. Good luck, John McCrossen

To answer your question in post #4, "Can the aluminum disk be used with the 500 lower guard"? No!, The 12" disk will not fit in the 10" 500 lower guard.

Does this satisfactorily answer your question? If not, I'll be happy to clarify it for you - without getting snarky.
It's amazing how some react to a completely innocent post:confused: I did spend time gathering what I thought were to correct answers. Be careful how you take things before jumping to conclusions on your own.

Major update to this post...
*************************************

The 500 dust collector has some major changes from the 510 lower guard. The boss that is used to attach the upper guard on the 510 is milled away, as is some of the features towards the bottom. Please check this post for more pictures:
http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showpos ... stcount=16
or for the whole thread:
https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=5575

This is updated information as of 4/11/10 and supersedes the information below and in following posts of mine on this thread.

I'm sorry I missed this before but better you know about it now then later still.

*************************************

So guess what? It looks like the 510 guard will work on the 500's. I had to climb to the top of a shelf and dig out my 500 gear to make sure, after looking at the dust chute and the 505/510/520 lower guard it is clear that the 500 dusts chute is just a sub-set of the other.

So here are some pictures for all to see.

So it looks like you can use the 510 guard but only when the disk sander is to the outside of the table.

Thanks John,

I hadn't thought of making my own. That is a good idea and would allow it to be used with both of my existing disks and the 3rd that I hope to get soon. It would also allow me to use a 4" connector for my non-SS dust collector.

Those pictures give me a great starting point!

One more quick question - your home-built chute has the dust connection oriented to the back side of the SS as do the originals. I'm guessing this is just to keep the hoses out from underfoot. From a collection standpoint, wouldn't it work best to have the connection on the front side? It looks like you are doing that with the 2nd hose kind of positioned at the front edge.

Thanks Ed!

I appreciate you digging them out and taking the photos. Can you shed some extra light on the last comment? It sounds like the 510 guard can't be used with the disk riding through the slot of the 500 table. Is that because of the table tubes interfering or some other reason?

At this point I am leaning towards making my own so I can use any disk I want, but I am trying to better understand how all these factors come together.

Yes, it will not fit between the 500 table posts. Shopsmith sells the 510 lower guard without the spring loaded upper plate as a sanding dust collector for all machines. It is used at the side of all tables. Works pretty well.
Since you have a 4" DC system, I would recommend building your own. Remember to put some corner blocks in the lower corners to reduce buildup there.

Great idea John. Nothing like back to the basics! So simple. I'll be adding that one to my projects list also. Your brain child??

The dust chute is not my brain child but it works pretty well. The wood dust chute was with the pile of parts that came with my goldie when I picked it up a few years ago. I think the original owner made it himself. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I think I remember seeing a picture or a drawing for it but I can not find anything on it. I did see a picture in my old PTWFE showing how to make the round hose reducer as a lathe project. My guess is that someone in the Shopsmith world has a plan for it. Let me know if anyone wants some better detailed pictures of the chute. John McCrossen

Consider this a dumb question, but what is the black T knob used for?

This is how the upper blade guard attaches, it is forked sort of piece that slides in from above and the t-knob locks it in place.
