Greenie Belt Sander - Undersized Miter Slot?

I bought a used greenie belt sander several months ago. I have used it a bunch but never needed to use the miter gauge with it until yesterday. When I tried to, the miter slot proved to be too small.

I have the SS pistol grip miter gauge. I tired it with a couple non-SS models and they didn't fit either. Does anyone have any insight into this?

It is definitely a SS miter gauge. It fits perfectly on my bandsaw (new aluminum table) and my old 500 table.

I used my digital calipers and the miter gauge bar is exactly 1/32" larger than the slot. The slot is very clean and free from any corrosion. I thoroughly cleaned up the miter bar and it makes no difference. Measuring both, they are very consistent in all locations. It really looks to me like the belt sander table was machined 1/32" smaller than the miter bar.

Loosen the Taper Screw #279 in the miter bar and see if that helps.

Mike the bar and the slot at several points and post the results.

With a digital fractional calipers, the bar is consistently 47/64" and the slot is 45/64". Both measured at several different spots.

I just checked the bar on my 520 miter gauge and it averaged 0.724 so the slot on your belt sander must be off by .020 - 0.25 and one that must not have been caught by quality control when made. Catch a used one on ebay or see if you can get a machinist to clean it up. Sorry I could not have been more help.

Hi,

I don't doubt the slot is wrong but some digital calipers do this thing of going to the nearest 1/64" and sometimes that is not what you want to be having happen.

If the calipers can read decimal use that setting and see what it reads then.

If you are not to far off you might be able to resort to some hand effort and get the slot to size. Taking off a few thousands is not bad...

If you only need 90 degrees, build a replacement out of some scrape hardwood if you have any.
