Lathe Tool Rest

Post by ryanbp01 »

Has anyone here have the arm which holds the lathe tool rest break on them while turning? I just had it happen to me a few minutes ago while turning a project.

JPG-

It broke on the opposite side of the handle which tightens the tool rest. I plan on calling Shopsmith Monday morning. It appears the arm is made of cast aluminum. I hadn't noticed any cracks or anything which would have appeared out of place. I plan on taking it the the SS User Group meeting tomorrow afternoon.

Update: I ordered a replacement online on 12/24 and is on backorder. Yesterday I called Shopsmith about the arm. When I get the arm I will send the broken one so they can examine it and ascertain what caused the failure.
