Hello! I had to remove my headstock when I moved my Mark V to a new home. Sadly, when I put it back on, the wires leading to the power switch got snagged and came off. So...I now have four loose wires, a white and black leading to the motor and a white and black coming off of the power wire itself.
Can anyone tell me with certainty which wire goes to each of the four switch connections?
Yes I have the written instructions, You must have a toggle switch rather than a "Red Key type switch. Just looked them up a couple of days ago.
Looking at the back of the switch - The two white wires go to the left corners of the switch. The white from the motor goes to the top left and the white from the line goes to the lower left.
Also from the back - The two black wires go to the right side of the switch. The black one from the motor goes to the upper right and the one from the line goes to the lower right.
I suggest you draw a picture of a rectangle with labels showing these wires attaching to the corners. You'll have it next time.

Thank you!!! To clarify, I do have the toggle switch. When you say that "looking from the back of the switch", am I correct in thinking that the "top left" of the switch implies that the switch is oriented such that "on" is up? Seems like a silly question, I know, but I'd rather ask something so obvious and be right than attach the wires, be wrong, and fry something.
Folks, you would be amazed at how often Customer Service gets questions like this -- and how hard they are to answer with words alone. To help illustrate what to do, the third Sawdust Session on September 15, 2007 will include a segment on how to replace both types of switches. If you can't attend the session, look for it at http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/Sawdust_Sessions.htm.

Yes, On position of the switch should be UP! There's no such thing as stupid questions!

In my previous response, I neglected to tell you that the wires should/must be routed inside the headstock so they will not rub on any of the moving parts. Mine is the two wire set up but I think the routing of the wires is probably the same. My Wires come from the motor around (to the quill side) of the "Headstock Lock Arm" - then pass through a plastic clip that is attached to the "Speed control assembly" - then to the switch. Hope this helps.
