Two questions:

1. How does the wooden auxiliary fence fit on the machine?

2. Is there a hole in the top of the rip fence (like the Mark Vs have)?

You did get me looking at it more closely however. ...to be honest I have spent more time looking at the lathe thing... There is a 1/8 plate carefully screwed to the back of the aluminum piece that is a suspiciously good fit in the machined channel for the ext table mount.

So now we know that it is a support for something. Any ideas what?

And on the topic of the ext table mount screw, wht am I missing? Why does it have to be this long?

2)Mike, If you are refering to the wooden part with the screw crank handle it is a mount for mark V SPT's. It is shown mounted in position in the first post in this thread. If you are refering to something else let me know.

that definitely looks like where it was made for. clearing the end of the morse taper would explain why it was asymmetric and suggest that it was used in lathe mode. are there any unknown parts that look like they sit on top of the headstock or the SPT adapter and wind up at the same height as this widget? maybe it is the support for one end of the template for an early lathe duplicator to go with the other lathe widget.

Good pickup on the asymetry Ivan. I went looking for any more mystery parts but found none. However I did discover a few interesting coincidences:

The mystery bracket is exactly level with the top of the pully cover. Note the convenient location of the pully cover mounting screw. Who needs another support ?

The Cutter tip and the "guide pin" Line up almost perfectly when one end of the pin is bottomed in the hole. Cutter extention is adjustable but this is where it was left.

Lastly when the tool rest arm is in its most stable position (right down) the cutter lines up vertically with the centreline of the turning.
With the carriage free to slide, the rest arm free to rotate, and the cutter holder free to rotate the turner can access all possible angles to get at the work. With the handle in the right hand and the left controling the carriage position,he has excellent control of the cutter, which will always be exactly below the pattern.

This network is now ready to declare "Gentlemen, we have a copy lathe". Brilliant deductions Ivan... You da Man !!

Question re SPT adapter: What secures it to the way tubes? Set screws form the outer sides?

BTW Interesting home made extension table!

Any explanation for the extra hole in the center of the table carriage?

I realize it is north of the border, but I am patient re answers.

The spt adapter isn't in this thread but is in another. It has holes bored in the machine side that the tube ends fit into.

It just hit me! The crank in addition to clamping the SPT posts, also screws into the tie rod to 'secure' it! Excellent design!
