Was your 'project' arranging the items for photographing or did you actually make them??:DJPG40504 wrote:My latest project(almost completed). The tape is locating the lettering which will be laser engraved at Woodcraft.

Very nice job. What will the final presentation be.....shadow box, mount on wall, free standing on a table?

They are intended to be USED simultaneously by two different 'officers'(the dueling is just an excuse to arrange them that way for the pix).
The raw materials were from a log fished out of the river ???years ago. I have had the 'log' for at least 25 yrs. It was very 'dry'(prone to tear out). Checking was also a problem(when driving the spur and tailstock). Thin CA is a project saver(the glue, not the state).

Did you creates threads for the handle to head joint???
It's absolutely amazing how a piece of river wood can turn out to be a great looking project. Unbelievable. What kind of wood is it?
Since getting the ShopSmith's, I've looked at 'scrap' wood differently. More than 3/4 of the pieces I would have previously thrown away as scrap are now in a 'future projects' pile.

No threaded handle! 1" hole with an anti-rotation 1/4" dowel. Handles turned to 1" diameter at the head end. Hole for dowel drilled in end of handle. Very tight fit. After final finishing(tung oil ala minwax) they will probably fuse together. I had them assembled overnight, And pulling them apart was quite an effort!
It be Black Walnut ala KY! The 'log' was about 4' long and about 10" diameter. The sap wood was devoured by the river! Cut the head blanks with a 'sawzall' using an 8" blade. Cut to size on band saw. Started with two 4" x 4" x 5 1/2" chunks. Cut the corners off at 45 degrees to start turning with an octagonally shaped 'blank'.
