pen mandrel for S.S

Post by No name »

does anyone know if S.S has a pen mandrel just for the S.S I was able to make a mandrel to fit. The one i purchased from woodcraft has ruined several brass inserts. The only reason i want another is to have back up. Thanks to the people that have helped me i am now turning about 2-3 pens a week after work, and just about to finish small dining table.

Pen Mandrel

Try Penn State Industries. They make a mandrel that is fitted for the SS. I have one and it works great.

Just received mine from Woodcraft, what should I look for I haven't turned a pen yet and don't want to get disinterested.

The Penn State Mandrell integrates well with the SS. It even uses the same size set screw. Made several pens with it and like it a lot. Pen making is fun and at times frustrating. I have wasted wood and brass making them by digging too deep, or sloppy drilling. Just be patient and remember the look on some ones face when you give them a pen you just made. It is what keeps me going.

Thanks penn state im going to their website right away. And about the look on peoplees faces my boss couldnt believe it when i handed him a pen i had turned (good for brownie points). And another person in a differnt forum said he purchased his mandrel from woodcraft and had no problems with it so maybe mine was faulty,so to reply to the other gentleman hopefully you will not have problems with yours.thanhs again to those who posted a reply.

I just ordered the Basic Starter Set w/ Shopsmith Mandrel (#PKSTART1C) from Penn State. It comes with the mandrel, 10 pre-drilled blanks, 5 pen and 5 pencil kits, a couple of HCS chisels and a couple of other things I can't remember right now. I watched my dad turn pens when I was younger on his SS & I'm really looking forward to doing the same. :)

To dasazer my mandrel was in fact warped or bent right out of the package so closely inspect the straightness of the product.Like i said im still new to pen turning so a little common sense on my part would have helped.Dont take for granted like i did when you buy something its perfect out of the box.The only reason i was able to fashion one was because of the metal lathe at work and a little bit of help from a co worker.I hope i have answered your question the best i could.
