Does anyone have experience with both the 500 and 510/520 where they could relate comparative dust extraction efficiencies? I'm disappointed with my 500s. If I upgrade to a 520 will I still find significant saw dust down the front of the machine?

No, a 520 upgrade will not eliminate dust but it will certainly improve on the situation. This thread discusses a mod to the lower dust collector to help improve that.

500 vs 520 Dust
I bought it new from Shopsmith. It's the plastic one with 1- 2 1/4" hose connection.tryinhard wrote:You mention a lot of dust. Which of the saw guards do you have? Is your lower saw guard metal with a 1.5" hose connection, a plastic lower guard with 1.5" hose connection with plastic tie bar guard, or plastic lower guard with two hose connections?

I have had both and they are both about the same. Dusty's post takes you to some of the modifications that helped. I only did part of them and saw little improvement on the saw chips but I am sure the dust itself was less.

I have a 500 with the small port on the back of the guard. sawdust all over the place, if you tape up some of the holes it is some better. bought a used 510 this summer... hook it up to 4 inch dust collector , i would say about 90 percent better still some dust on tubes but, no big pile on floor.. use the sanding disk with this setup and about zero dust. i would think you would be quite happy with dust collection on the 520 upgrade.....
