What year was your Greenie born? Read the 1st post before voting

I just lucked into a Greenie, my first ShopSmith!

I saw a SS about 10 years and have all ways wanted one, but just couldn't afford it. I picked this up for $200 and it is in much better shape that most that I have seen.

Serial # 36130 To my reckoning that means Jan. of 1960.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet but hope to fire it up this weekend.

Welcome to the forum untouchable. Congrats on your new purchase. Make sure to watch ShopSmiths sawdust sessions that talk about inspection, care, and maintenance. Don't just fire it up without first inspecting it real well.

I'll take some pics when I get a chance, but the unit is in a poor shape. The motor runs, but the speed control gears (on the level and the little gear) are worn bald. Also both drive belt and gilmer belt are worn and cracking. Plan on putting the tool in good shape soon!

Just inherited SN# 314189. Told by the lady on the phone at SS that it was produced late 1955. That seems to jive with the numbers in you table, Mike, indicating that it was built in Dec 1955.

Now for the restoration...!

I just joined this forum and what a great resource this is. I bought my Greenie (how politically correct can you get in today's world!) in 1977, well used (seized) and dirty. I "rebuilt" it back then with some new parts but didn't use it for many years - long story. I've just dismantled it for another go and I've learned so much in just a couple of hours on this site. Thanks to everyone for their input. My serial number is 286039 which gives it a birthdate of Nov/Dec. 1954 according to the SS info. I'll be checking this site a lot so thanks again and keep 'em coming.

Welcome to the forum sliver. Make sure to checkout all the Sawdust sessions, especially the 4 part ShopSmith reborn in sessions 21, 22, 23, 24. on taking care of your Greenie.

I have registered my Oct 1959 greenie # 357084 although she is only with me temporarily. I picked her up to get the planer and belt sander with which she was equipped and now, repaired, cleaned up and painted ("Deep Green" is the new "Verde Green" for those of us who can't be bothered special ordering) she is on craigslist. She is a fine old girl and I will miss her-assuming someone can get me to part with her.
